Introduction and Getting Started!

The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the requirements of the IB Diploma Program. It is written on a topic, that student is interested in. The main point is to make a research on the topic. A student must have a subject supervisor, so topic has to be written in the limits of the subject.

Getting Started

• Firstly, find a topic you are really interested in. No need to find trendy topics.

• Don't stress. 4,000 words of extended essay is nothing after your research. You will find much more information, like 5,000 – 8,000 words as your first draft.

• Don’t look at the quantity of words that this task requires. Go to the point of the essay.  

• Remember to focus on specific topic instead of a general subject area.

Choose a Subject Area

Be sure to write about a topic you are really interested in. Otherwise, you won’t have leaning to the subject. If you know that you like physics, go for it. Find exactly what you are interested in, or always wanted to know more and make an investigation as one of your extended essay ideas.

Don’t forget to include methods, materials and observations as they all are part of the word count. Furthermore, show the committee that you know what you were doing with your extended essay.

Read a general academic article

• Read academic articles of the chosen area and get the main point.

• Conclusion of the reading an article must contain possible themes of your topic.

• Get more information about the particular parts of the subject you are writing about.

• Don’t even think to use materials from IB assessments that you have mentioned in your subject.

Formulate a temporary thesis and outline

• Don’t rewrite facts or opinions you have read in other subject papers.

• The point is to find possible answers and hypotheses. • Create such temporary thesis that will suggest the points

of your outline. It is the way your reader will follow your paper through to the conclusion.

Write the rough draft

• Be sure that your thesis is 100% specific to the subject.• Write and check the outline, in which every topic is

relevant to the thesis.• Try not to start from the introduction. Collect and write

the overall information.• Don’t forget to include evidence, reflection, arguments,

counter arguments, and interpretation. • Introduce relevant details and evidence to the thesis.

Revise the draft

• Remember that the essay must have maximum 4,000 words and minimum 3,700. The main think inside is quality of the paper, but not the quantity of the words.

• Check whether the essay has proper sentence structure, paragraph development, style, smooth transitions, and unnecessary repetition of facts or extended essay ideas.

• Add some subject area criteria and estimate your level according to it. Improve your writing, especially in the weak spots.

Add Title Page, Abstract, Contents Page, and Works Cited

• Title Page – according to name has to have the title, the full name of the candidate, the candidate’s IB number, Extended Essay’s subject area, the full date, essay’s word count, and abstract word count.

• Extended Essay Abstract – essentially a summary, that is a shortened version of the thesis. It should cover all the items mentioned in the extended essay and be totally clear.

• Contents Page – start with the title of the essay and continue to the table of contents, putting page numbers of the essay. It must contain the introduction, parts of the essay, conclusion and works cited.
