Getting to Know You!

Creating your writer’s portfolio

There are a lot of students on the

team-

How will you get to know each other?

The Writer’s Portfolio is one way!

What is its purpose?

Eventually it will hold some of your writing samples

Right now it is a visual tool for all of us to get to know you

It will be a visual display of your personality & interests

Let’s look at some examples

So, now look at my writer’s portfolio.

What can you learn about me by looking at my portfolio?

So, how should you begin?

So, how should you begin?

Decide what you want us to know about you, your family, your hobbies and interests, etc.

Gather pictures, images, & words to show us. You must have a photo of yourself.

You can glue on clip art, words from magazines, or draw on the folder

Print your first and last name on the tab--keep the folder horizontal

Arrange the pictures however you like. They can overlap, but you don’t have to cover the whole folder.

The folder will hang in the hall, so only decorate the one side that will show.

You can decorate it with glier, markers, ribbons, but remember it will hang in the hall.

Instructions continued:

IMPORTANT:You cannot have any loose edges!

So glue down all edges!

RESTRICTIONS

DO NOT use any family photographs without your parents’ permission!!! You can use a photocopy.

All images must be suitable for the school seing--nothing that would upset Grandma, Mr. Strong, or me.

No weapons, no professional athletes, no musicians, no models or actors! You are the star here!

Public Speaking

Learning to speak to groups is an important skill. You will be doing this at least once a quarter.

Your first public speaking assignment will be to tell us about yourself! Using the images and information on your Writing Portfolio, tell the class about yourself. Plan on speaking for a minute or two.

You-- the listenerWhen your classmates are speaking, it is your responsibility to:

Be quiet, and listen carefully

Try to remember their names

Pay aention to students who have the same interests and before you know it you’ll have-----

lots of new friends.
