Accessing OU Resources: SOLO, Oxlip+, ejournals and Libguides
Kate Jackson
Human Rights 2012
What resources?
• Books (SOLO)• Databases (SOLO, Oxlip+, Library website,
Libguide)• Journal articles (SOLO, Ejournals, Library
website, Libguide)• Guides and further help (Library website,
Libguide)
SOLO
• Search Oxford Libraries Online @ http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk
• Contains– Books (both hard copy and online)– Journals (both by title and by article information)– Databases
• Added functionality to help with reference management and e-bookshelf
• Has a live help chat box
Put in your search terms in the main box. Here it is the author and words from the title but you can search by subject
You can refine your search by using the drop down boxes.
Find the work you are looking for on the list – if there are multiple editions you need to choose “view all 2 versions” to see the editions
Click on Locations underneath and look for Law Library or Bodleian Law Library to find out where it is in the Bodleian Law Library the Call
Number will tell you the class mark but if you are not sure then ask a member of staff.
If a book is online then you can narrow it down by clicking on “show only online resources” and then clicking on view versions on the right
You know it is available electronically if you see the View Online link which should take you through to the online version
Oxlip+
• Oxford Libraries Information Platform @ http://oxlip-plus.bodleian.ox.ac.uk
• Database of databases• Use this if SOLO is bringing up too many
results and you know it is a database• Contains databases across all subject areas• Can log in to access remotely the same way as
SOLO
If you are away from Oxford then you can log in in the top right using your Oxford Single Sign On
Type in the name of the database in the title box or words from the title. You can also using the A-Z letters but be aware that there are 1,000s of databases listed. Do not use the subject option as this is not that good for Human Rights.
You will then get a list of the database (or just one if the terms used were uncommon) click on the link to take you through to the database. You may get asked for your single sign on again.
Oxford Ejournals
• Electronic journals @ http://oxlip-plus.bodleian.ox.ac.uk (under the Find a journal tab)
• Use this if SOLO is bringing up too many results and you know it is a journal and want it electronically
• Available remotely• Search by journal title• Lists all databases/websites where the journal is
available
Make sure you choose the Find e-journal tab
Put in the title of the journal or words from the title. Click on the link and it will bring up another box. This lists which database (s) the journal is on and the date range. A journal may be available in more than one database
Libguides
• Set of guides produced by experienced OU staff
• Covers many subject areas• Human Rights guide available @
http://ox.libguides.com/law-humanrights
The front page is a general starting point to Human Rights. The tabs across the top go into more detail.
There is a tab specifically for you at the end. This will have information about accessing resources remotely and some of the presentations seen today
Current Awareness
• Lots of tools available• Different databases and journals have ways of
setting up alerts that email new results to you• Another more efficient way is to use a RSS feed
reader and then subscribe to RSS feeds• RSS feeds can be update to webpages, news,
journal table of contents• Can learn more about how to do this in an
individual session
