Story
The movie is about a young woman named Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers as tribute to take her sister Prim’s place in the hunger games . The country of Panem is divided into 12 districts and is controlled by the capital. Every year each district must send one boy and girl as tributes into the hunger games and fight to the death until only one tribute remains. The games are to serve as a reminder of the rebellion and what can happen if anyone tries to rise against the capital.
Problems in dystopia
• Panem is divided into 12 districts and controlled by the capital
• They have no say or power• They have limited resources• Every year, each district must send two
tributes(picked via lottery)to fight to the death in the hunger games
Katniss as a dystopian hero
Katniss volunteered to be tribute in order to save her sister from going into the games. She was the first person to ever volunteer as tribute in district 12. This showed courage and bravery.
During the games she showed compassion when a young tribute named Rue was killed. She sang to her as she died and laid flowers around her.
continued
By the end of the movie , Katniss has made enough of an impression on the citizens that the capital is worried it may inspire the districts to rebel. At the end of the games, she did not give into the capital’s game. She instead decided she and Peeta(her fellow tribute) would instead eat the poisonous berries and there would be no victor and just before the eat them they are stopped and both declared victors.
Impact
Katniss showed the districts that you can defy the capital . In the movie district 11 is shown rebelling after Rue’s death.
Fears for our own culture
In the movie, the capital fears rebellion which is why they have the hunger games. I don’t feel our culture has those same fears. It seems our culture’s fears are mostly related to terrorism, global warming and our rights.
Warning of where our culture is headed
I don’t believe the movie is a warning of where our culture is headed but more of a reflection on what our society is now. The Capital ‘s obsession with the games mirrors the obsession with reality television. Most of the citizens in the districts live in poverty but not in the capital. In our society we already have some who live in overabundance and the others with not enough. People already kill eachother, we wouldn’t need the hunger games to witness that, there seems to be a new story everyday on the news.
Where this problem is seen
• Everyday we can see the struggle some people have to get food and shelter.
• It seems everytime we’re online we are being informed of shootings, mass crime or natural disasters.
Avoiding the dystopian culture in the film
The idea of America holding yearly hunger games or dividing the country into districts seems too far fetched. However we already have plenty of problems that could easily be part of a dystopian world. The film only offered a limited view of what the districts struggles were besides poverty and having no power.
