Students learning through making tutorial
videos
• Identify key concepts to teach
• Think like a teacher – plan the sequence of the lesson
• Write a script – most of us don’t ad lib well
• Think about visuals – what will they see?
Narration On screen
“In this video I will teach prime
factorization”
Definition in notepad w/ large font –
give time to read
“Let’s begin by looking at a simple
example…”
Switch window to SMART
Notebook, black pen selected.
Etc. Etc.
• For drawing: Paint, SMART Notebook…
• For writing: Notepad or Word
• Draw, write, move shapes: SMART Notebook
• Show any file: images, video, slideshows…
• Switch windows: Alt+Tab (PC) or Cmd + Tab (Mac)
• Succinct = good (5 minute limitation for screenr videos)
• Don’t write long text during recording – you probably
can’t write & talk fluently at the same time, anyway
• Smallest possible screen capture area - but no smaller
• I have a pause button , and I’m not afraid to use it!
• Enter a description of what you made
• Where do you publish to?
• Screenr.com
• Export to YouTube – larger audience
• How do you share it?
• Link on blog, wiki, Google Document…
• Embed in portal, wiki or blog…
• Share all student tutorials in one location – a large
collection is exponentially more useful than single videos
scattered all over the place
