MSc. GIM: Aims and Objectives
The GIM Program equips students with skills to transform research outputs into innovative products and services. Learning the tools and techniques for working globally, students apply this knowledge practically by working on projects with industry partners in different countries, further enhancing their understanding of international business. GIM addresses new challenges in innovative global enterprise and provides:
A practical and global perspective of Innovation Management
Skills applicable to both larger multinational organisations- and smaller enterprises
Expanded perspectives of Innovation Management including Technology Management, R&D, and Product/Service Development with a focus on the interface between disciplines
Increased research capability focused on activities at the periphery of the innovation process

History & structure of GIM
The MSc. in Global Innovation Management (GIM)(see: www.globalinnovationmanagement.org)
• enables graduates of first degrees in engineering, science and technology to successfully manage the innovation process across international boundaries.
• started in 2008 as a 2-year Joint MSc degree program.
• was initiated and founded by the core consortia partners University of Strathclyde (UofS) in Scotland, Aalborg University in Denmark and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) in Germany; (Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) in Australia was an associated consortia partner until 2014).
• was an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (EMMC) between 2008 and 2014.
• All students (160 so far) have a common first year at UofS and study at AAU, SUT or TUHH for their second year of study; each year students undertake 60 ECTS of study over two semesters

Benefits of the Erasmus Label
• Better global visibility and perception of TUHH
• Increased global reputation (among students, academics and on institutional level)
• Forming international academic partnerships has become easier
• Larger number of international student applications (not only for Erasmus programs)
• Erasmus scholarship recipients very often among top 15% of all graduates
• Additional opportunities for faculty mobility
• Additional joint research projects
• Increased joint publications as a result

Need for a modified GIM program
Following reasons necessitate a realignment of the established GIM program:
• Due to internal policy requirements University of Strathclyde plans to offer its own 1-year Innovation Management Master program. The current GIM program could be continued as an Advanced Master program. However, this aim does not meet the expectations of AAU and TUHH.
• The internal program evaluation (based on student surveys) revealed the necessity for changes with regard to contents during the first year (especially a stronger focus on general Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) related subjects).
• To truly consider the global range of different approaches to Innovation Management, the integration of additional selected distinguished partners with unique GIM related teaching and research profiles is necessary and promising.
• The proposed structure of the reformed GIM program would allow an application for ERASMUS+ sponsorship/ promotion starting in 2015. This is a declared objective of the two consortia partners AAU and TUHH. UofS new planned structure would not meet the ERASMUS + requirements.

Structure of the modified GIM program
The reformed MSc. in Global Innovation Management (GIM) will continue as a unique 2-year program offered jointly by internationally distinguished universities with extraordinary competences in the field of Technology and Innovation Management.
As previously students will have the opportunity to study at two international universities, with the program's delivery over two years providing a greater depth of learning, more industrial engagement and a rich cultural experience.
All students will spend their first academic year (semester 1 and 2) at TUHH before they move on to their second year destination. The reformed GIM program is supposed to start in October 2015.

Intended learning objectives
We have identified a number of new challenges that the collaborative and international nature of the future GIM consortium would address in unique and effective ways. The programme’s curriculum and structure have been developed to:
• provide candidates with a truly global perspective of Innovation Management focused both on working on a global scale and on experience of study and industry in more than one country,
• provide candidates with an understanding of the differences in global approaches to innovation management depending on the context; emerging economies, transitioning economies, industrial economies, and knowledge-based economies,
• provide candidates with skill sets that can be applied in both larger multinational organisations, and small and medium-sized enterprises which account for the majority of European and global industry,
• provide candidates with skills particularly suited to delivering high technology research output as in the form of innovative products and services,
• expand the Innovation Management student’s perspective to include Technology Management, Research and Development and Product/Service Development in line with contemporary positions that suggest education and practice should focus more on the overlaps and links between disciplines involved in the process,
• develop research capable graduates with a greater understanding of activities inputting into the innovation process.
