What is Impressionism? Impressionism is an art style that first appeared in the late
1800’s in Europe This style came, in part, as a reaction to the invention of
the camera Impressionists were influenced by Japanese Art
(especially Japanese woodblocks) The main goal of Impressionists was to capture the world
around them--especially the modern and natural worlds Some famous Impressionists are: Claude Monet, Edouard
Manet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas

Claude Monet’s paintings:
– Often are of nature scenes (Water and water lilies were his favorite)
– Capture natural light (He would paint the same scene during different parts of the day to capture the light in its many forms)
– Show a woman and boy (Monet’s wife Camille and son Jean)

Famous Impressionists: Renoir Pierre Auguste Renoir’s paintings:
– Many times are portraits (Especially of women and children outdoors, children dressed in their best clothes)
– Show happily dancing couples– Have many people together – Show people with very fair skin and rosy
cheeks– Oil paints were a favored medium of Renoir

– Many times show a mother and child together
– Show a young woman with red hair (Mary’s own sister Lydia)
– Are of simple, everyday moments of home life
– Use pastels, which give a soft, fuzzy look to her pictures

– The women many times are nude and stare directly at the viewer
