Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School

This highly reputed school has students reflecting the good name of the school by showing extraordinary talent. Once the permission was granted by the principal to conduct Design For Change contest, the students were chosen by their respective class teachers and undeniably were some of the brightest in the class. Once we met with children we spoke about the possibilities of creating a change. The children responded with great enthusiasm. But however being a part of such a nice school with good amenities the children found it hard to come up with problems. They thought more globally trying to create a change for the world. Sister Principal of Holy Angels requested that the children try making a change for the benefit of the school and the brain storming began. The students wanted to plant trees but fortunately the gardeners in school did a very good job at planting adequate trees and plants. Then the children addressed the question of trying to reduce the pollution levels outside their school, owing to the fact that they are situated in such a crowded area of the city which is T.Nagar a busy shopping locality.

Despite being in the midst of their term exams the children were willing to sacrifice a little time after school hours to make charts educating auto drivers and car drivers to avoid horning and to not park in a haphazard manner outside their premises. The students also volunteered to communicate to the vehicle drivers about not raising the engine which can reduce pollution, to not waste gas by leaving the vehicle on while waiting for the students and to not horn.

After having worked for three sessions on making beautiful charts that communicated a strong message the students agreed on putting up the chart on the last day of their term. They finished their exams early and were eagerly waiting for us to come and help them put the charts up.

The response to these charts was very successful and many passers by stopped and asked the students what the purpose of these charts were. Come of people appreciated the work and one man was so impressed with one of the charts that he requested permission to take a picture. The children were ecstatic. They dint expect such a response and were pleased with themselves. They said they’d continue to talk to people and educate them about noise and air pollution and how important it is to the society. The children learnt that if they are determined to create a change and set their minds on it, they can achieve it by channelling their creative ideas and wonderful talent.

They also realized their capability and power of their voices for people to listen as many people are willing to lend their ears to young children with honest voices and are more accepting towards their innocent pleas than adults with trained voices.

The problem posed:

Auto drivers parking the vehicle in a much disorganised manner, blocking flow of traffic and horning.

SOLUTION:
