▪ On 2 January a 17-year-old killed herself using poison after being gang raped in November. She had hoped for justice, but was allegedly pressured to drop her case by police officers.

▪ On 13 January police arrested six men who had allegedly gang raped a 29-year-old on a bus, just weeks after the same happened to Nirbhaya. She was sexually assaulted throughout the night by seven men.

▪ On 14 January a seven-year-old girl was raped in the bathroom of her school during recess. The bathroom was directly next to the headmistress’s office, who was arrested for negligence of duty.

Why do these happen?

▪ Degradation of traditional moral values owing to the neglect in providing value based education to children

▪ Male dominant society

▪ Alcohol consumption

▪ Inefficient system of law and order; poor policing

▪ Women who are not trained to be on their own guard

What can be done?

But how??

Here are a few tips and tricks that might reduce the risk of getting raped.

Make your world a little more safer. Follow these:• Do not be distracted, especially by

technology.

Do not jog with your iPod because attackers are looking for easy, distracted individuals who look-like they are not paying attention to surroundings.• Learn to trust your gut instincts.

Use your instincts and be aware of your freeze instinct. Move quickly ... fight, flight or freeze are our natural instincts, so be aware that all 3 exist.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

• Understand that your hairstyle could benefit an attacker.Ponytails and long hair are the number one styles rapists seek because long hair and ponytails are easy to grab.

Not how attractive you dress, but how carefully you dress is what matters. Long, thin skirts that make it hard to run make you vulnerable. Harder-to-remove clothes are the best.

• Consider how you dress.

• Carry defensive items only if you know how to use them.

• Yell, shout and draw attention to yourself incase you are in trouble.

Remember..

You have the right to mutilate your attacker. They had even worse intentions and you have full right to defend yourself. Don't be afraid or nervous to do anything to them; they deserve it. Be as aggressive as possible.
