We set aggressive goals•95 percent of students pass both Math and English sections of ISTEP+•25 percent of high school students will achieve a passing score on at

least one Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam or earn college credit

•90 percent of students will graduate high school

Students are performing better by every measure•71 percent are passing on ISTEP+•13.4 percent are passing AP•85.7 percent are graduating from high school

Early Childhood Reading

•Basic reading proficiency is critical to student success•Every child, regardless of race or social economic background should be able to read by the end of third grade•Indiana’s IREAD-3 measures students’ readiness for success moving forward•Additionally, Indiana has put an intense focus on early reading instruction with a developmental system of assessments prior to IREAD-3•Currently, 84 percent of third grades show grade-level reading skills

Educator Effectiveness Policies

Basic Principles•Supporting, developing and retaining Indiana’s good teachers and

principals•Holding principals and superintendents accountable for their role in that

work•Providing meaningful feedback and professional development to help all

educators improve classroom practice

Excellence in Performance•New grant supports schools to reward and build excellence•$6 million has already been awarded – with $9 million available next

year.

School Choice

Choice Scholarship Programs•Allows qualifying families to use state education dollars (called scholarships or vouchers) to send children to non-public schools that best meet needs

•Largest first-year voucher program in country with more than 3,900 students in 2011-2012 school year

•To date, that number has more than doubled for 2012-2013 school year

Indiana Charter School Board (ICSB)•Authorizes high-performing charter schools and holds them

accountable for performance•Approved 32 new charter schools during 2011-2012

Innovation & Technology

Indiana has increased technology options for schools•Changed policies now allow digital-type texts to be considered

alongside traditional textbooks•Currently, 108 school corporations are providing a one-to-one

technology initiative•Online testing has risen from 16,000 in 2010 to over 334,000 in 2012

Innovation Fund•Supports districts in starting or expanding high quality innovative

programs•$2.5 million has been awarded to date
