Streets…

• Dictate our options• How we travel• Our routes• …but are often ignored

MODE

Page 7: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Electric Vehicles are…

• Another mode• Not a car

www.thealannote.com

Page 8: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

And will have to fight for its slice of the modal pie

www.thealannote.com

Page 9: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

…why fight?

…when we can balance

The Car…

• Has a designated role in the American lifestyle

• Is optimized for the present infrastructure

• Has innate benefits

Page 12: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Re-think…

• The streets• The modal balance• The policies • The data collected

What Next?

www.thealannote.com

Page 14: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

EVs won’t work…

• If they’re looked at individually• EVs work when complimented with other

mode choices and correct density/land uses

Pasadena• The City of Pasadena currently has– The Metro Goldline– Many TOD station sites– Trip Reduction Ordinance– ARTS Bus– EV Charging Stations– Supportive BIDs– Pasadena Sustainability Plan (Green Team)

…to become EV ready• The City of Pasadena is implementing– Bicycle Master Plan– Complete Streets LOS– Upgraded ITS– Streetcar– EV infrastructure plan

www.thealannote.com

Page 17: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Bicycle Master Plan• Will inform residents

the best routes to bike• Set clear design

standards for bicycle infrastructure

• Let bicycling become more predictable and attractive for casual user

www.thealannote.com

Page 18: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Complete Streets LOS• Go beyond assessing level

of service for cars• Puts the car on the back

burner• Prioritizes buses,

pedestrian, bicyclist• Creates smarter

intersections and more balanced streets

www.thealannote.com

Page 19: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Upgraded ITS• One cannot compute the

LOS of new modes without upgraded infrastructure to get accurate inputs

• Will prioritize bikes, peds, cars, buses once LOS is determined

• Rebalance the streets

www.thealannote.com

Page 20: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

Streetcar• Fixed route transit that

compliments bus and light rail

• Increases density• Fixed route, easy to predict

transportation mode that integrates with bicyclist

• Economic development benefits

www.thealannote.com

Page 21: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

EV Infrastructure Plan• One cannot throw charging

stations in the wind• Strategic and coordinated

efforts between DOT and Public Works must occur to ensure safety, effectiveness, and installation

• Once EVs are established, charging stations can act as business catalyst

There is not an EV Ready City…in America•Seattle, WA has made lots of noise with Ecotality•San Diego, CA is on board•Richmond, VA is finding the right partners•San Fransisco, CA has made EVs mainstream

www.thealannote.com

Page 23: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

…but none• Has tied it together to ensure that EVs are an

option and not a primary mode• Pasadena is on track

www.thealannote.com

Page 24: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

What does it take?• A new perspective on data• A new set of policies• Public – Private Partnerships• Correct Demographics• Correct densities• Correct Land Uses

Page 26: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

If all of this doesn’t happen…• EVs have a good

chance of becoming a commodity vehicle like the Neighborhood Electric Vehicles, and Segway

www.thealannote.com

Page 27: Integrated Mobility: Connecting EV with Everything Else

If that happens…we won’t fix any mobility problems
