• Imagery is the use of words to create mental pictures; the use of words to appeal to the senses.

• Personification is giving human characteristics to nonhuman things.

• Irony is commonly the reverse of the expected.

• A simile is two unlike things compared using “like” or “as”.

• A metaphor is two unlike things directly compared.
