What is an intercultural city?

• A place where different ethnicgroups and nationalities livetogether in harmony

• They celebrate their festivalsand traditions.

• They are integrated in thesociety, but keeping their ownidentities.

There have been several examples of intercultural cities

in Spain throughout history, such as:

A bit of History…

Lavapiés wasoriginally a square in thejewish quarter. There was

a fountain where peoplewashed their feet beforegoing inside thesinagogue. Now there is acatholic church where thesinagogue was.

Due to thegrowth of SpanishEconomy duringthe last decade,many immigrantscame to Spain.

Living in LAVAPIÉS

The different communities live in HARMONYeven though they have gone through difficulttimes. In the past it was a dirty and violent

neighbourhood and now it is one of most livelyand colourful in Madrid. A perfect example of

Melting Pot.

There is a flea marketon Sundays and Bank Holidays in Lavapiés where people of different origins selltheir items.
