HISTORY:• The term BAROQUE once had negative meaning.• The name s derived from baroque pearls (pearls with unusual and odd shapes.• Compared to renaissance art, it was considered to be “over dramatic” and the

architecture, “over decorated”

INTRODUCTION:• The BAROQUE style was first introduced in 1600 in Italy, and after that was

spread across Europe. • It is a style that used exaggerated movements, expressions and gestures drama,

tension, and grandeur in sculpture, literature, dance, painting and music.• Baroque style is the symbol of power.• Baroque style spread throughout Europe, including Italy, Holland, France and

Spain.

Influence Towards Baroque:• Roman catholic church supported baroque

art style in response to the protestant reformation ( movement reform catholic church)-communication of religious themes with viewer’s direct and emotional involvement.

• Aristocracy adopted baroque style to impress visitors and to express triumphant power and control.

 ELEMENTS OF DESIGN:

• Characterized as dramatic, opulent, and luxurious with rich colors, intricately designed furniture, gilded and ornamental accessories, and high-end textiles

• Floors are typically made from high-end materials such as solid wood or marble

• Furniture is intricately detailed to accent embellishments with curved legs, carved details, and gilding• Gold frames and gilding on statues and pottery are common

CHARACTERISTICS

FOLIAGE MOTIFS A profusion of plant life characterizes the Baroque style. Scrolling foliage and

garlands of flowers decorate many objects.

MARQUETRY Marquetry is the laying of veneers of different- coloured woods onto the surface

of furniture. This novel form of decoration was learned from French and Dutch cabinet-makers.

PUTTI The Italian word 'putti' meaning 'boys' is the name

given to the chubby infants seen on many Baroque objects.

CRESTS AND INITIALS The decorative use of monograms, usually people's initials, was a

particular feature of the Baroque style. Heraldic crests were also incorporated into designs as symbols of status and ownership.

LAMBREQUIN MOTIF • Baroque interiors were enriched with luxurious textiles.

The distinctive features of these fabrics were transformed into motifs to be used in other media. The lambrequin, or tasseled cloth, motif is one of the most common.

FURNITURE IN BAROQUE:• started: in 17th century• Architects: Gianlorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini.• Big and elaborate pieces of furniture are the characteristics of baroque

interior designs. • The gold color is the most typical for this style.

CARYATIDS:• ‘CARYATIDS’ and the scroll patterns were introduced.

Using the caryatid and scroll patterns in baroque designs means the use of female figures along with scroll-shaped and spiral-turned legs to support the structure of the furniture.

WARDROBS:• Baroque architecture had been transformed to

structures with curved fronts and was first used on wardrobes and chests of drawers.

CHAIRS:• Chairs were designed with high back and rich carvings. Even the cane

chairs had high backs with beautifully turned parts in place of the carved areas
