Introduction

At the end of this powerpoint you will be able to:

recognise and identify bibliographic databases

and apply this to your academic studies.

Learning objectives

A database is a collection of information organised to provide efficient retrieval.*

Bibliographic databases provide a descriptive record of an item, but the item itself is not provided in the database. Information about the item is provided, including such things as author, title, subject, publisher, etc. found by using keywords.*

Examples include Emerald, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar amongst many others.

What is a bibliographic database?

To collect relevant and credible information for an assignment or project.

Many bibliographic databases are subject specific so they can be used to guarantee relevant information is found.

Why use bibliographic databases?

In order to find relevant information you must enter keywords into the database you are searching.

e.g. Google Scholar

How to use bibliographic databases?

EBSCO Bibliographic Databases allow researchers to search for articles, essays, books and reviews. Many of these records have links to electronic copies of the full text articles.

We have now reached the end of this brief introduction to bibliographic databases.

To improve the use of bibliographic databases the use of search techniques such as Boolean logic can be employed.
