Courses in Sports Management
Course OverviewSports Management is about the “business of sport”.
Sports Management education delves into the various business aspects that keeps the show running – financing, operations, marketing, social impact, law and technology among others.
Industry Feedback has indicated that there is Lack of talent in the industry (low experience & exposure combined with lack of training), absence of a focused Sports Management course that has the right mix of theoretical knowledge and practical industry exposure.
Market Growth“Spends are getting divided over a
larger basket of sports”
“Sports Industry in India to grow to an estimated Rs.4807 crores by end of 2015
as per a study” (GroupM ESP – SportzPower Sponsrship Report 2015)
Recruiter’s PerspectiveWho?
• Marketing and managing sports events are the prominent roles - Entry level positions for managing sports events, executives for developing business and new business procurement are primarily filled by campus recruits
Preferred Campuses/Institutes for Recruiters
• Institutes offering courses in Sports domain like Amity, G.D. Goenka and IISM, Mumbai are preferred for campus recruitments with CTC offered ranging from 12-25K p.m. Currently, the options available for campus recruitments are not very wide, the course being a niche one.
Major Skills they look for
• Interest in and knowledge of sports is prima facie requirement, along with good comm. skills for client interaction. Prior internship/industry experience in event management is also preferred by recruiters.
Challenges in recruitments
• Lateral hiring is an expensive proposition. Also, as a mode it is less useful in case middle level positions are required to be filled.
• It has been observed that institutes impart less ground level training which is extremely important in Sports Management as a course.
• As far as theoretical knowledge is concerned, they have often found institutes to be less than thorough on the course curriculum and training
• Students have been found to be more serious towards a long term career in Sports Management and Sports Marketing

Additionally, the country will need thousands of sport managers in fields such as advertising, media, sponsorship sales and managements, tournament operations, player representation/ management, clubs/ academies management, and more.
