How do the Organisational Change Management (OCM)Maturity Model (OCMMM), Change Management Practitioner Competency Model (CMPCM) and the Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK) fit together?

OCMMM - How well are we exploiting OCM to improve the

performance of our organisation?

CMPCM – What should our Change Managers

be doing to enable success of each

change? (Current standards focus mainly

on the project level of the maturity model)

CMBoK – What core and non-core OCM knowledge underpins practice at all

levels of the maturity model?

Organisational Performance + Practitioner Performance + Underpinning knowledge

Note: Entry level competency model currently in development

What is a ‘Body of Knowledge’?

Page 14: Introducing the Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK): raising the standard for change management professionals

What is a ‘Body of Knowledge’?

• Produced by a professional association

• Describes and defines the knowledge that underpins effective practice of that profession

• The CMBoK:– Identifies key knowledge (structured to make access easier)– Defines and describes that knowledge– Shows relationships between areas of knowledge and practice– Links to valuable reference sources

Page 15: Introducing the Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK): raising the standard for change management professionals

The CMBoK:

• indicates the scope of the knowledge required to practise effectively as a Change Manager in a range of situations

• provides definitions and descriptions of each knowledge area, including a clear indication of the depth of knowledge required in each area

• offers a reliable, reputable and realistic range of reference sources in which these knowledge areas can be found and studied

• shows how areas of knowledge relate to one another, and to their practical application in the Change Management Institute competence model

Page 16: Introducing the Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK): raising the standard for change management professionals

How was the CMBoK developed?

• Joint CMI/APMG leadership: team of experienced authors identified,

• Competence model analysed and themes identified– Tentative structure of knowledge proposed, reviewed, amended

– Knowledge areas, knowledge components

– Tracked against each other and against competence model

– Research in all the knowledge areas we had identified

– Key reference sources located and studied

• First draft of CMBoK

• First review process– wide by survey

– deep by review panel

• Revision, rewriting and second review process

• Finalised and published October 2013

Case studies

• Major Australian bank – one of their ‘big four’ – bought 100 copies of the CMBoK and are using it as the basis of developing their internal Change Management community. It is also being used to structure the recruitment of new CM resources.

• An independent (and very experienced) CM consultant commented that she now has a ‘very well-thumbed’ copy of the CMBoK, having referred to it a great deal in beginning a major new assignment.

• The same consultant added that the major UK financial governance institution in which she is working have borrowed her CMBoK often. They are basing their Change Management training on its structure and on the references it offers. It has also helped legitimize the importance of human change in a very project-focused culture.
