Population Density

How is P.D. determined?Total population of a country ÷ land area(this is inaccurate because some regions have large areas of uninhabitable land - such as deserts or frozen tundras)

Total population ÷ arable land (land that can be farmed) is more accurate

Patterns of Population

Why do people live where they do?Basic Needs:● Soil - can it sustain basic food needs (farming)● Water - essential to human life● Climate - can humans adapt to their environmentEconomic Reasons:Businesses locate near the raw materials they use, people live in close proximity to their place of employment - urbanization (growth of city population)

Population Growth:

Effects of Growth: (two views)● Increased famine, disease, and natural resource

depletion● As human numbers rise, technology and creativity

will offset the effects of overpopulation

Growth Rate:

Terms to know:Birth Rate - # of live births each year per 1,000 people

Death Rate - # of deaths each year per 1,000 people

Immigrants - people who move into a country

Emigrants - people who leave a country to live elsewhere

Page 8: Introduction to population

Growth Rate Explained:Zero Population Growth:B.R. + I = D.R. + E

Population Increase:B.R. + I > D.R. + E

Population Decline:B.R. + I < D.R. + E

(B.R. - Birth Rate, I - Immigrants, D.R. - Death Rate, E - Emigrants)
