2. Apply for admission to UMUCYou may be admitted to UMUC at any time during the year. The admission requirements and applicationforms for the School of Undergraduate Studies andthe Graduate School of Management and Technologycan be found online at www.umuc.edu/admissions.No SAT is required for undergraduate admission, and no GMAT or GRE is required for admission tomaster’s degree or certificate programs.

3. Select your classes for the upcoming termThis brochure lists the courses required for each certifi-cate program. You can find the class schedules for theupcoming term in the interactive online schedule ofclasses at www.umuc.edu/schedule. Be sure to checkcourse descriptions for prerequisites and plan to takethose courses before starting certificate coursework.

Certificate Requirements

UNDERGRADUATE

Certificate Requirements

UMUC offers 46 undergraduate certificate programs, including

30 that are available online. Completion of an undergraduate certifi-

cate program requires 16 to 21 credits (except for paralegal studies,

which requires 60 credits), with a minimum grade of C in all courses.

You can earn up to half of the total credits for any undergraduate cer-

tificate through credit by examination, Prior Learning portfolio cred-

it, or transfer credit from other schools. For details on these options,

visit the UMUC Web site at www.umuc.edu/ugp.

Many undergraduate certificates are upper level in focus and assume

prior coursework. Check prerequisites for all courses in the certificate

program before beginning coursework. Course prerequisites may be

satisfied by coursework, credit by examination, or Prior Learning

portfolio credit, under current policies for such credit. The certificate

descriptions in this brochure show the recommended course sequence

for each program; however, these sequences are not required unless

specified by the prerequisites.

Completion of Your Certificate

Your undergraduate certificate will be awarded upon successful comple-

tion of the required coursework. At the beginning of the term that

you plan to finish the coursework required for your certificate, you

should submit the certificate application along with the $50 nonrefund-

able fee. Application deadlines are listed on the UMUC Web site at

www.umuc.edu/calendar. The certificate application form is available

online via MyUMUC.

When you submit the certificate application, you should notify your

advisor of your intention to complete your certificate. If you are working

toward a degree at the same time, you must apply for the certificate

before you graduate. Once completed and approved, your certificate will

be mailed to you and your transcript will be updated to reflect comple-

tion of your certificate.

GRADUATE

Certificate Requirements

UMUC offers 32 graduate certificate programs that are available

online. Completion of a graduate certificate program requires

12 to 24 credits, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The Graduate School

will accept up to 3 credits of graduate coursework in transfer from

an accredited university for a certificate program if that credit has

not already been applied to a graduate degree.

Completion of Your Certificate

Your graduate certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of

the required coursework. At the beginning of the term in which you plan

to finish the coursework required for your certificate, you should notify

Graduate Advising (visit www.umuc.edu/calendar for term application

deadlines). A review will be performed once all the courses have been

completed to determine if you have met the certificate requirements.

The introductory accounting certificate program meets theneeds of nonaccounting personnel and managers who requireknowledge of accounting to advance in their professions. The terrorism and institutions certificate program explores howinstitutions confront terrorism and the aftermath of terroristacts. It can benefit security individuals who are in charge of pro-tecting government facilities, private security agency employees,police officers, detective agents, public health and public safetyadministrators/officers, and potential counterterrorism profes-sionals, as well as the general public.
