SCIENCE HOMEWORK BY JACK GARTHWAITE.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

• I will explain ten different branches of science.

• I will list three facts about the different sciences.

• And I will make it as fun and interesting as possible.

ENTOMOLOGY, THE STUDY OF INSECTS.

• Entomology is, just as I stated, the study of insects.

• Some insects have weird and wacky powers, for example, a simple ant, can carry ten times it's weight, that's like a 12 year old child lifting 400 Kilos, seriously.

• And another weird thing, is that female praying mantises Decapitate males during mating, then EATS THEM! The reason is, that females need food for laying the eggs, this rarely happens in the wild, it mostly happens in captivity.

• And to top that off, caterpillars have more muscles than humans, you think that's amazing? How many do they have? OVER 2000!!!

ORNITHOLOGY, THE STUDY OF BIRDS.

• Birds are lovely to look at, research and just plain amazing, people love to go birdwatching and people grow special trees in their gardens to attract them.

• The kakapo is a large bright plumaged bird, it is critically endangered, there are only 126 Kakapo left, including 11 chicks, born last year.

• The kakapo are cheeky, rather plump, Eccentric and nocturnal parrots, they have moss green plumage that camouflages them from their hunters, they have a subsonic mating boom that you can hear for about 10 kilometers, (Polly wanna crack-- BOOM!)

BRONTOLOGY, THE STUDY OF THUNDER.

• Don't get muddled, lightning is very different to thunder, I just put this picture in because you cant see sound.

• Thunder, is the sound you hear a couple milliseconds after lightning, lightning is the thing you see before thunder, light travels faster than sound, so you see the bolt of lightning before the thunder, it is like an audible shockwave through the air, when your close to the strike, it is like a big loud clap, like a potato pistol thousandfold, but when your far away, it's like a low grumble, like when I'm hungry.

• Now for lightning, lightning at one point, is hotter than the surface of the sun, so getting struck by lightning will give you "Shocking" injuries.

CATACOUSTICS, THE STUDY OF REFLECTED SOUND.

• Catacoustics is, as I said, the study of reflected sound, with acoustics being the study of sound, You can experience catacoustics by going into a cathedral and shouting, know what? That isn't really a good idea, try a cave, that's where angry priests can't get you.

• Lots of people use sound to measure the depth of oceans and stuff, and bats use echolocation to find their prey, "seeing" that their "Blind as a bat"

• Sometimes, this is very hard to do, miners use very powerful echolocation to find certain ores, it can be very useful to people trying to find things in a difficult place to go to.

MICROPAELEONTOLOGY, THE STUDY OF OLD FOSSILS.

• Fossils can be studied by a magnifying glass, a microscope or just your eye, they are pretty much animals and plants buried underground and compressed till they become rocks themselves.

• One of the most interesting fossils to humanity, that every country NEEDS, is coal, and oil, nothing too new, they WERE prehistoric plants that were compressed for so long that they turned into a black chalky rock we now know as coal, They are burned and used in generators for things like pistons and early cars, oil is pretty much the same, only it's a liquid.

OSMICS, THE STUDY OF SMELL.

• Yes, I am not joking, osmics is indeed the study of smell, sometimes desirable, like the smell of perfume, sometimes not, like perfume that smells like fish.

• Smells can be useful too! A strong pungent smell is added to barbecue gas for safety reasons, so the men using it don't get cooked themselves.

• Some people are smell impaired, either it's an event in their lives, or a genetic blip.

• Smell can affect taste, would you eat a hamburger if it smelled like my stinky socks? Didn't think so!

DENDROCHRONOLOGY, THE STUDY OF TREES RINGS.

• Yes, there is an "ology" dedicated to this, the rings in a trees trunk is basically its age, It is totally exact, no matter what.

• Tanemahuta is a tree in new Zealand that is about 3000/2000 years old, and no! We didn't count the rings, we used carbon dating.

• Those rings are the rings of a felled tree in Bristol zoo England, I dare you to count them!

• This is a legitimate science, it is used to determine the age of a felled tree, it is easier to use than carbon dating, and much more effective.

PISCATOLOGY, THE STUDY OF FISH.

• Piscatology, is the art or science of fishing, New Zealand has a sweet reputation for awesome fishing spots and big fish.

• In salt water there are four tide changes, two low tide, and two high tides each day.

• The best time to go fishing is one hour before until one hour after the tide change.

• In fresh water, sunset and sunrise are the best time to fish.

RHINOLOGY, THE STUDY OF THE NOSE AND SINUS.

• A rhinologist is a scientist or a doctor that studies the nasal passages and treats nasal infections.

• One time, in Egypt, at about 4000 BC an inscription on a sandstone wall read in hieroglyphics that someone "Healed the Pharaohs nostrils"

• When air is breathed in through the nose it is warmed, filtered and humidified, if you breath in through your mouth, it isn't, try it now, I am not kookoo.

• Epistaxis is a nose bleed that can be caused by an injury, and surgery is sometimes used to cure disfigurement to their nose, your nose sometimes turns red when you have a cold, that isn't a condition, your just using tissues too much!

Page 13: Jacks science homework

ZOOPHYTOLOGY, THE STUDY OF ZOOPHYTES.

• Zoophytology is a branch of zoology, that deals with zoophytes, an invertebrate species that tries to resemble plants to avoid being fishy chow.

• Some zoophytes are, sea cucumbers, (Honestly, you don't wanna eat this.) sea anemones, (These things are deadly poisonous, except to clownfish for some reason) And zooeals, (We learned about this thingy at year eight camp!) they are all invertebrate and quite funky things to study, most of them you need a microscope to study.

• Seriously, this isn't a brain, it is infact named the "Brain Coral!" Hehe.
