The different kinds of people IN-Town
Who is Tally? Our hero is a young girl named Tally. She starts this journey very much a part of the
society and believing in its methods and values. A free-spirited and somewhat mischievous teen. Smart and passionate. Physically and mentally tough. Willing to do anything for the people she cares about.
The “Smokies”A free living society of people that choose to leave their communites and live in the wilderness.
Tally joins this group against her will because the Specials won’t let her be made “pretty” unless she finds and betrays them.
These people pride themselves on living off the land and working as a community
Tally comes to love this lifestyle and decides to fight for it
What is Tally going to do? At the end of this book
our hero decides to risk sacrificing her individuality and freedom to think for herself in hopes of finding a cure for the mindlessness caused by the surgery.
Tally will allow herself to be turned “pretty” and thus have her brain scarred.
She will become just another drone-like follower.
Her friends will then kidnap her to test their cure

From very early on in life we are encouraged to fit in and not be too different from our peers.

Today’s Parallels
Good intentions taken to far Good intentions… so far
In the text we find that leadership imposes rules in the interest of safety.
All avenues of individual thought and value have been erased for the greater good.
In our own society we find that we do the same.
By law you must wear a seatbelt and in many states a helmet if on a motorcycle.
You can have your rights ignored if you’re a terrorist.
You may soon have to endure a cavity search to board a plane…..
The Moral of the Story In this book the leaders of society have chosen control as a
means to an end. Safety and security are assured by this.
We also note that safety and security do not make up a full life. A persons right to choose is more important to them than the
promise of their safety.
I feel this book is warning that if we keep allowing ridiculous laws to be passed under the guise of security, we risk loosing our rights to individuality all together.
