Manila moves to Madrid

While sojourning in Barcelona, Rizal received sad news about the cholera that was ravaging Manila and the provinces. Many people had died and more were dying daily. Sad news from the Philippines was the chatty letter of chengoy recounting the unhappiness of Leonor Rivera, who was getting thinner because of the absence of love one.

Life in Madrid

He enrolled at Universidad Central de Madrid(Central University of Madrid)

2 courses enrolled—Medicine and Philosophy and Letters. He studied painting and sculpture at Academy Fine Arts of

San Fernando. He also took private lessons in (GERMAN,FRENCH,&

ENGLISH)

Romance with Consuelo Ortiga y Perez

A La Senorita C. O. Y P.(To Miss C. O. Y P.) a lovely poem he wrote for her. 2 reasons why suddenly backed out with Consuelo:• 1. he was still engaged to Leonor Rivera• 2. his friend and co-worker in the Propaganda Movement EDUARDO

DE LETE was madly in love with her.

They Ask Me For Verses(Me Piden Versos)

Rizal joined Circula Hispano-Filipino(Hispano-Philippine Circle) which is a society of Spaniards and Filipino.

A poem requested by the members of the society. A sad poem which he personally declaimed during the New

Year’s Eve.

Rizal as Lover of Books

He purchased 2nd hand book store owned by Senor Roses. He was able to build a fair-sized private library. He was deeply affected by this 2 books:• 1. Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin• 2. Eugene Sue’s The Wandering Jew• (this 2 books aroused his sympathy for the oppressed and unfortunate people.
