NATIONAL EDUCATION

Kilis Provincial Directorate of National Education ( Kilis MEM), a public body, is the directorate that governs the educational

affairs of the Kilis province.

It is responsible for planning, programming, coordinating all level of schools and other institutions

connected to the organization.

It provides both formal and non-formal education, including adult education, for a population of more than 100.000 (about 200 schools, 1566 teachers and about 50000 students with refugee Syrian students) and numerous organizations.

OUR PROJECTS

Our institution prepares and implements projects on local, regional, national and international levels. We carry out projects funded by Social Support Service (SODES) of Turkish Ministry of Development and Silkroad Development Agency.

Our institution has had 7 EU Lifelong Learning projects up to know. ( Individual schools’ projects are included)

Towards Inclusive Education

The project is about "Inclusive Education" in Kilis and in Marupe/Latvia. During the project, the similarities of inclusive education was searched and the differences was changed in a positive way. The system of education for pupils with SEN (Special Education Needs) in Europe was evaluated, observed and learnt. The knowledge was shared among the curriculum, lesson plans, strategical plans, total quality management, school development and the projects. Booklet “Inclusive education around us”Booklet about inclusive education in Marupe has been created.

The project "Value education and ecological responsibility" wishes to help pupils and parents realize the ecological problems existing within the area they live in and the whole European space as well. During their lessons from the school curriculum and extracurricular activities students will talk about things which pollute the air, destroy the natural habitat, kill plants and animals, change our lives. They will recognize the problems, write about them and share them with colleagues from school, their parents, friends and other people from their community. They will learn how to change the way they live, how to respect what we have, how to help the environment firstly by saving paper, water, energy. Knowing that Earth resources aren't endless, students will be educated for values such as: responsibility, family, tolerance, respect and non-violence. Students and their teachers will try to find sustainable solutions to minimize the problems they have discovered. www.valueco.net

VALUE EDUCATION AND ECOLOGICAL RESPONSABILITY

In a world more and more globalised, the decisions taken anywhere affects everywhere else; aware of this we’d like to raise our pupils’ awareness of the importance of having a cleaner world by recycling things at hand. We want to grow responsible consumers and citizens as well as prevent spending the limited resources of the planet by fully integrating this issue in the curriculum in an interdisciplinary way. This is a cross-curricular project working collaboratively to promote an intercultural education, to increase the foreign languages learning, the linguistic diversity and to improve the education towards a good environment. This project also aims to build a cultural awareness among pupils, teachers and local community to help us cross barriers and learn to accept different values and cultures. The broad scope of our project enables all pupils including those with special needs, and those from different ethnic backgrounds, to participate in an active and creative way. The need for sustainable solutions has never been greater, and the clock is ticking. Kilis hosts 110.000 refugees that fled from the ongoing civil war in Syria. Kilis MEM supplies education services for Syrian refugee students (both

people at the school age or over) The institution is now also responsible for all educational issues of the refugee population (about 20000 children and

adults) which is a very new concept and experience for it.

In current situation 19.137 students get school education in 252 classrooms in 18 Temporary Training Centers. Some of these centers are in the two refugee camps and the rest are scattered throughout the city. Among these centers are 3 kindergartens, 10 primary schools, 2 high schools, 3 secondary schools.

In these centers Turkish and Syrian teachers offers education for children ranging from pre-school to high school. ( 139 Turkish teachers and 658 Syrian teachers= 795 teachers total) Turkish teachers teach Turkish language to these refugee students while the main lessons are taught by Syrian teachers. At each center there are Turkish and Syrian headmasters that are called coordinators. The education in these schools are based on Turkish curriculum.

We have two refugee camps for refugee population here.
