Course Objectives

Reflect upon different thematic issues and use language appropriate to

each context.

Monitor our own learning process and enrich our way of studying, reading,

writing, etc.

Communicate clearly and accurately, both in writing and in speaking,

employing suitable structures and lexical items.

Read texts and spot elements that respond to style, register and genre.

Gain awareness of the use of words to achieve effects on readers.

Write different kinds of compositions, such as descriptions, narratives,

(in)formal letters, articles, discursive essays and so on.

Carry out activities that will develop both fluency and accuracy in oral

English.

Give presentations.

Do collaborative work in the class and share experiences that will

contribute to each individual’s performance throughout the year.

Make room for creativity and tolerance so that different viewpoints can be

expressed with ease.

Aims

1) To enable students to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing

2) To enable students to understand and respond appropriately to what they hear, read and experience

3) To encourage students to enjoy and appreciate a variety of language

4) To complement students’ other areas of study by developing skills of a more general application (e.g. analysis, synthesis, drawing of inferences)

5) To promote students’ personal development and an understanding of themselves and others.

Assessment objectives for WRITING Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:

W1 articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined

W2 order and present facts, ideas and opinions W3 understand and use a range of appropriate

vocabulary W4 use language and register appropriate to audience

and context W5 make accurate and effective use of paragraphs,

grammatical structures, sentences, punctuation and spelling.

Assessment objectives for READING

Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:

R 1 understand and collate explicit meanings

R2 understand, explain and collate implicit meanings and attitudes

R3 select, analyse and evaluate what is relevant to specific purposes

R4 understand how writers achieve effects.
