Objectives for the sessionIntegration of Learning Competencies in Mathematics at Reremoana SchoolOur Learning Model reflects the crucial relationship Learning to Learn and Learning TogetherGetting Started - Issues and Concerns, Model for Implementation, Rubrics for Assessing the Learning Competency, Accountability

Are the Learning Competencies living and breathing at Reremoana School? Are the embedded into the curriculum and into the children’s consciences?

We believe.....Students should actively be included in all aspects of the decision makingStudents are actively involved in assessing their own learning and in thinking about their success in terms of learning to learn.AIM OF EMPOWERING THEM TO CONTINUE LEARNING AT AND BEYOND SCHOOL

Integration of Learning Competencies in Mathematics at Reremoana School

FUNDAMENTALS - from the Ministry......

Students must be central in the judgements and decisions about their learning. Conversations with students about their strengths and goals as learners will be important. When making judgements about competency, different types of evidence should be collected. More than one person is involved in making judgements.

Learning Competencies

When I am Questioning I...• confirm what I already know• evaluate existing thoughts, ideas and relationships• clarify a situation or process • take my learning to deeper level• use tools and strategies to think about a situation or solve a problem• look at a situation from a variety of perspectives• maintain an inquisitive attitude

Questioning is...

Being curious about what I think, learn and

do.

Natural Links to the Problem Solving......

Do we want assessment information about the Learning Competencies for the purposes we already know, or might there by new purposes here as well?Do we actually need to assess the learning competencies?Do the Learning Competencies introduce different types of assessment challenges, and how should we respond to these challenges?

Questioning: Numeracy and Statistics

Term One: Statistical Investigation. Aim: Our students developing the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically and logically. They learn to structure and to organise, to carry out procedures flexibly and accurately, to process communicate information, and to enjoy intellectual challenge. Learning Competency: QuestioningResources: http://lisapaap.weebly.com

Two Components we are trialling....The concept is that the Rubric and the

Learning Journal work together to support each other.Rubric: Level One - Level Four. Can be used both formatively and summatively. Indicator Sheet. http://lisapaap.weebly.comLearning Journal - over time the students will create a rich collection of personal stories about themselves and their maths journey, and their ability to question appropriately. Used formatively.

Page 9: Learning competencies in mathematics at reremoana school

Learning JournalStudents will be using their journal to set clear competency learning goals, recording the evidence of their success in meeting these, and reflecting on their ongoing needs:

Writing across the curriculumThis is not a cumulative work sampleStudents may complete the Learning Journal using

Weebly or possibly in a book....Authentic - blogging style, students are reflecting on

their work, Use this in Student Led ConferencesReal time reflection, sharingIntegration of ICT - authentic context, using ICT

technologies to show-case the technology

Page 10: Learning competencies in mathematics at reremoana school

Learning JournalStudents will be using their journal to set clear competency learning goals, recording the evidence of their success in meeting these, and reflecting on their ongoing needs:

The learning journal will be positiveIt will be highly motivating for students - they will have

access outside of school hoursThe student is constantly evaluating their learningIt will emphasise the close link between learning and

assessmentIt will be over a sustained period of time (not one off).

So what will this journal look like....

Students will talk about how they solve math problems....Questioning - how are they going with different types of questions. Can they come up with a question for the statistics investigation? Questioning - are they contributing in problem solving time? Are they able to provide a problem for the class? Can they brainstorm these on the computer....Students will record their musings, wonderings...Students may include - pic’s, voice, video, use of Web 2.0 tools

Page 12: Learning competencies in mathematics at reremoana school

Maths and Writing links....Writing across the curriculum: The learning journal will be a coherent series of entries of the student as a reflective learner. All parts of the learning journal will bear a clear relationship to each other and to purpose: reflecting on the maths learning/questioning. When you (the teacher) look at the ‘journal’ you will be able to understand how the student made the judgements and the evidence they have used. National Standards reporting - writing/maths

RubricConsideration when using the rubric....Rubrics typically differentiate between levels of performance at one moment in time and are based on one source of evidence. Only one aspect of a task can be manageably assessed.Contexts are not usually taken into account (very general)Rubrics - students are judged by othersYou have never “achieved” a competency we are all still on a journey. We have worked to create a four level rubric for Questioning for Term 1. http://lisapapp.weebly.com/mathematics-lc.html#

Exciting Initiatives...As we move towards a Learning Management System....ICT Integration - Michelle and Kate are also working in Weebly to create a class Intranet. This is similar to the WIKI Michelle had last year and Kate’s Weebly. This year the students will be have their own spaces to create their learning journals - shifting the control of the space to not only the teacher but also the student.Using the computer offers more student autonomy and student choice in learning and assessment, in the choice of content, and the choice of ways of presenting.Rachel - focussing on questioning in numeracy and statistics using the learning journal and rubric to support the learningWould you like to access the Rubrics, come on board?
