How is this postmodern?

The Lego movie is postmodern because of the basic premise that we’re constantly caught between opposing concepts like “knowledge” and “doubt”, “reality” and “unreality”. Also due to the fact that it includes pastiche this is because it doesn’t take itself too seriously, also it includes many intertextuality references especially due to the ionic characters that are featured in it, such as batman. Also due to the fact that the way they are portrayed as they are ‘mocking’ them. There is also metafiction due to the storyline being implied that it was written by a younger person.

How can you apply it to

Baurillard theory? The whole world in the Lego Movie is hyper-real version of the world. Also Lord Business in the Lego Movie is a hyper-real version f the father who is constructing the world from the outside with his son.

The whole film is based and constructed around the idea of magic realism.

How can you apply it to Focault

theory? Internal audience-> Emmett because he always wants to fit in and be involved with everyone.

External audience-> All the other character’s watching and making sure the jobs are being done. Father and Son playing with the hyper-real world from the outside.

How does it differ or challenge other

media? It challenges other media texts due to the fact there are many references to other films like batman where only adults will understand the references and the humor it contains, where as you usually tend to find animated films suitable for children and easy for them to fully understand.

How is it similar to other media?

It is similar to other animated films as it will appeal to children due to the references to other movie characters such as batman. Also with its link to Lego and everything being made out of Lego.

It also features a clapper board at the beginning of the film which again links to other medias and films, this is also meta because it is self-referential and a parody because of the humor that it contains and how clapper boards are not required in animated films because there is no ‘real life’ acting.

It also follows the narrative structure that a film should follow, in the way that there are 3 different acts within the film and in the end everything comes together.

Audience … The Lego Movie is aimed to be for children especially because it is a PG. However this does not mean that parents and adults will not watch it as they will and due to all the postmodern features it contains they are the ones who are more likely to understand, such as the idea of the ‘perfect world’ and the mocking of batman.
