Watch for the Editing Techniques and discuss purposes
Storytelling• Editing is about telling a story with visual imagery.
• Storytelling is the art of conveying events and in this case those events are being told through the use of video.
• Linear narratives are stories which are edited in sequence
• Non-linear are stories edited out of sequence.
• Can you think of examples of linear and non-linear edits?
• How did Luther use editing for storytelling?
Engaging the Viewer• The choice of shots and sounds are used
to engage and intrigue the viewer.
• How did Luther use editing to engage you?
• What made you want to learn more?
• Why and how should editing engage it’s audience?
Development of Drama• The sequences of shots and the
order in which the story is told can build up tension in the story.
• What did the editor choose to tell you or not tell you to develop the drama and atmosphere of the story in Luther?
Relationship to genre• Editing often works alongside it’s genre.
• Romances tend to use softer imagery, romantic music and the shot choices are often more close ups for intimacy between characters.
• Horrors tend to choose shots which put you on edge such as long shots where you can see the background, and tense music, alongside jumpy sound effects.
• How was Luther edited for it’s genre “thriller”?
Combining shots into sequences• Editing is about bringing the shots into a full
sequence.
• Without editing, raw footage is dull and directionless.
• It takes out unnecessary footage and turns it into a flowing sequence rather than broken up stand alone shots.
Creating Motivation
• Editing also allows the audience to learn of the character motivations, by choosing certain cuts this help them learn more or less about a character’s motivation in a story.
• For example; a romantic comedy genre film the audience are persuade to feel sympathy and emotion for the main character so the cuts of this character will be slow so that the audience are able to learn more about them.
Directing the audience• Editing can point out or with-hold
information from it’s audience to direct the audience away from a revealing part of the story.
• Editing can be an important tool for directing the audience feelings.
• For example: editing can make people feel anxious or scared with the right music and cutting.
Creating Pace• Slow or fast paced cuts can alter the feel
of the film.
• The pace of the story is dependent on the music, and shot types the editor choose and the speed at which they are delivered.
• What was the pace of Luther?
Delivering information• Editing can be used to give away
information this can be done with text, graphics and images.
• For instance the news uses all of these to help deliver information to the viewer.
Visually represent music• In music videos editing is used
along side the rhythm of the music to visually represent the music.
• The pacing and timing of the cuts, shot choices and the content of the video all helps to visually present the music.
Assignment TASK: 10 reasons for editing blog
• Write your first blog post “10 reasons for editing”
• Use examples to explain what you think the reasons for editing are.
• You can use Luther as and example if you wish to.
