Romanian Folklore and Traditions

The countryside is the heart and soul of Romania, where peasant culture remains a strong force and medieval life prevails, as it does nowhere else in Europe.

The Danube Delta

•Danube River ends its journey of almost 1864 miles through Europe in south-eastern Romania. •Here the river divides into 3 branches (Chilia, Sulina, Sfântu Gheorghe) forming the Danube Delta. •Overall, the delta is a triangular swampy area of marshes, floating reed islands and sandbanks. •It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation as well as a protected wetland and natural habitat for rare species of plants and animals.

•Situated in the South-East of the country, the Danube Delta is worldwide known for its natural beauty, being a paradise of wildlife.

Page 37: Liceul Pedagogic

The Danube Delta The maze of canals bordered by

reed, willows and oaks entangled in lianas, offers the perfect breeding ground for countless species of birds, some of them from as far away as China and Africa. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come here to escape the harsh winters of Northern Europe.

Some 300 species of birds make Danube’s Delta their home in  summer. Birds are not the only inhabitants of the Delta. There is also a rich community of fish and mammals; from wildcats, foxes and wolves, to even an occasional boar or deer. Altogether, more than 3,000 animal species can be seen here, as well as 1,700 plant species.

TULCEA – The gate to the Danube Delta

• The county of Tulcea is well known for its natural beauties: the Danube Delta – the youngest land in the country, Macin Mountains – the oldest in Romania and in Europe, the Black Sea shore.

• But it is also known for its numerous ethnic communities which live in tolerance and understanding on this land. Romanians, Russians, Lipovanski, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Turkish, Greeks, Aromanians, Italians, Germans, Armenians, Hungarians, Rroma people and Jews live and work here, speak their own languages, keep their century-old traditions and pray in their own churches/temples/mosques.

Page 41: Liceul Pedagogic

• Tulcea is the capital of the county with the same name.

• The city lies on seven hills, just like Rome, and has a population of about 100,000 inhabitans.

• It was founded by the Greeks in the 4th century B.C. under the name of Aegyssus.

• Tulcea is considered to be “the gate to the Danube Delta” as this is the starting point for the tours into the magnificent world of the Delta.
