SOCIALISING

Perhaps one of the most important likes of our target audience is socialising with friends. Many of Dubstep’s lyrics talk about meeting people, dancing and going out at night. For example the lyrics in Katy B’s song ‘Perfect Stranger’ are ‘When I step into the crowd Something told me that I'd meet you today’.

CLUBBING AND RAVING• Dubstep is the main genre

played in clubs and raves. All dubstep songs contain an intro and a base drop which enhances the audience to dance. The target audience of dubstep want to experience the culture of the genre, the original culture being in underground raves and clubs where strong lights and strobes are used to increase adrenalin levels and atmosphere. The artists of Dubstep use these nights as a way of advertising their selves and their music, and the target audience enjoy being there.

GETTING SMASHED

• A bbc article in 2002 states that:

• 97% of clubbers do drugs• 1.5 million people take

ecstasy every weekend in clubs.

• A times online article in 2009 states that in clubs:

• 98% do drugs• 83% take cocaine • 44% take Ketamine• 93% take cannabis

Many of dubstep songs talk about drugs and the effects. For example Stagga’s song Sick As Sin incorporates the lyrics ‘knocking you out like a bong of smack and waking you up like a bomb of crack’. Which suggests that the target audience is part of a drug culture which influences the conventions of dubstep.

USING THE INTERNET• The use of internet and technology is

the only way of listening to dubstep as it is rarely played on the radio or television. Youtube allows the audience to listen to dubstep songs that they know, but also find new artists and songs via the ‘suggestions’ link. Facebook is used by the majority of young people as a way of connecting with friends but also for dubstep nights to be arranged and organised. Via the ‘events’ application on Facebook, people are added to the list and also allowed to add friends to the event, which increases the popularity and making the night known to its audience.

AUTHORITY FIGURES• Many of Dubstep's songs object to

authority figures such as the police, the ‘Babylon system’ and parents. This is because the target audience are a young generation, wanting to be more free in what they do. Body guards outside clubs often don’t let people in, which angers the target audience. Police arrest people carrying drugs, which angers the target audence (as many take drugs). The ‘Babylon system’ angers the target audience because they have to conform ‘sometimes I feel trapped’-Skream lyrics. All these beliefs are talked about in dubstep lyrics, relating to the target audience.
