Why is this important?

The reason we want to be able to distinguish linear expressions from nonlinear expressions is because we will soon be solving linear equations. Nonlinear equations will be a set of equations you learn to solve in Algebra I, though we will begin to solve simple nonlinear equations later this year. We also want to be able to recognize linear equations in order to predict the shape of their graph, which is a concept we will learn more about later as well.
