LONDON

London is the capital of England. It was founded in the year forty-three as Londinium. Here are four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London, the settlement of Greenwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Palace of Westminster and its surroundings.

HISTORY

In the third and fourth centuries after Christ, the Romans left the city, but the trade continued to prosper. In the year seven hundred ninety-six, the Anglo-Saxons occupied the country and settled in London their royal residence. The builder of Westminster Abbey was Edward the Confessor. The city reborn economically and sumptuous monuments were built as the White Tower. After the victory of William the Conquer London became the capital of the country.

FROM THE PLAGUE TO AN ERA OF SPLENDOR

In 1665, many people died from the plague and in 1666 there was a fire that destroyed 80% of London. Christopher Wren was the one who rebuilt the city.With the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1837  a period of splendor began. It is known as the Victorian era.

THE WORLD WARS The city was very touched by the  first World War, which marked the end of the

Victorian era. But later , when it gained power another World War started and slowed things back again. Many monuments were destroyed and about  30.000 people were killed.In Pos-war and  late twentieth century, in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne and tried to modernize the city. The population increased and a  Greater London was born.
