Base mapping Process• Initially I had thought to use

google earth to map my site, but for some reason in attempt to look 3D the trees and other plants were very distorted which made the map very unclear, so I instead used an old topographic and boundary survey as my starting point.

The survey was slightly outdated so I then walked around and measured some of the new elements of the site to get more updated information. This included new trees, patio, decks, fences, and walkways.

Challenges• Some of the biggest challenges were measuring and approximating all

the curved lines were involved in the site.• It was also really difficult to measure the diameters of the trees, I had

to do some guess-work based off of measurements from the trunk of the tree to places approximately below the outer branches.• Drawing to scale also took a little while to get used to, and I had to

redraw some things a few times while I got accustomed to using the engineer's ruler and the math of scaling my measurements.

Zones and Sectors• My site is rather small, so it is mostly just Zone 0-1 as defined in our

text by Peter Bane.• There is however a rather difficult to navigate section at the back of

the site that has a pretty steep incline which may end up being a zone 2 area if I can figure out how to plant some fruit production plants or design an area for a compost pile.• Since my site is so small there also don’t seem to be very many

different sectors, mainly the sectors involve boundaries between the site and neighbor’s properties, with the main focus being on retaining a sense of privacy through the use of hedges and trees.

General Feelings about the Site• In general at this point I am feeling pretty positive about my site, it

feels much smaller than I had expected once everything was all mapped out, but there seems to still be a lot of great usable space. • This exercise revealed to me how many small ‘pockets’ of plants were

on my site that I hadn’t really thought about before (I was really only thinking of the main lawn and trees initially), and also reminded me that the site actually did continue past the fence at the back, which I tend to forget since that space is never used.
