Empire - Magazine – Textual analysis.

Page 2: Magazine research

On the top of the Empire magazine they have added the buzzword ‘Best’ this is used to show what they think of the article in the magazine and also to attract an audience to want to read it. If the magazine only said ‘winter preview’ it would only be appealing to he audience they already have, buying the magazine, so the word ‘best’ allows the magazine to appeal to a more mainstream audience.

Near the top of the magazine Empire have also used there strapline which is ‘The world’s biggest movie magazine’. This allows the people who are looking to buy in the film magazine market, that ‘Empire’ is the best. It basically tells the audience that there is no point in buying a different film magazine, this one is the best.

The masthead is the title of the magazine ‘Empire’. This magazine title is always Bold, the exact same font and normally always red (depending if the main film being discussed has a completely different theme.) This is the house style of the magazine and is used as ‘Empire’ is an established brand and known all around the world.

The main image on this magazine is of the well-known actor, Will Smith. This tells the audience that the main article in the magazine (this issue) is about the new film he is in, ‘I am Legend’. Having the majority of the front cover filled by Will Smith means that anyone who walks past the magazine and is a fan of him may pick up the magazine and have a read to see about the film he is in.

The headline to this magazine just says ‘I AM LEGEND’. This tells the audience that the main article in the magazine is about the new film, I am legend. This is clearly the headline because the font is the second biggest on the page after the title of the magazine.

Empire have also put an enigma on the front cover as they have put ‘25 world exclusives’ making the audience ask, what are they? What makes them world exclusives?

‘The Citizen Kane of comics is a go’. This is kicker as it is leading into the story, making an audience have to buy the magazine if they want to know what is means.

These pictures at the bottom of the magazine also show the audience what is going to appear in the magazine, with the hope that one of the films appeals to them enough to buy. These could all be seen as plugs, as they are showing what is inside.

Total Film – Magazine – Textual Analysis

The masthead on this magazine is very similar is the fact that the magazine has used the font, size and colour they are known for in the magazine industry. This is the branding of their products.

Again, Total Film have one main article in the magazine. Just like Empire, they also use a great big image of the main character from the film the article is about. This image of the character takes up the majority of the front cover, trying to attract people passing by who may not always buy this type of product, but could be big fans of Tom Cruise. The prop that is being shown with Tom Cruise gives the audience and idea of what type of film it is (Action in this case, as the prop is a gun).

Total Film also uses plugs on the front cover of there magazine. This seen at the bottom of the page, which contains names of films and actors, giving the audience an idea of what is featured inside of the magazine.

A buzzword being used on this front cover is ‘Revealed’. This is telling the audience that this is brand new information which they are likely to not hear from anywhere else, making the audience think that this magazine is the first one to get the good information about films.

Another buzzword used on this magazine is ‘Exclusive’ this is telling the audience that this certain piece of information will not be seen in any other film magazine and if they don’t buy this one, they will never learn of this information.

This magazine does have a strapline but isn’t bold so maybe it won’t be noticed by the public. But it is ‘The world’s best movie reviews’. This tells the audience that this magazine creates the best and most reliable reviews out of all of the other film magazines. Reviews are normally a dependency on if people will go and watch a certain film. If the reviews are good, people are more likely to go and watch that film. This magazine stating that they have the worlds best reviews could lead to the audience spending time and money to go and watch these films.

On the golden strip is the cover lines to the magazine. This gives the audience a bit of information regarding the main articles within the magazine

Another buzzword on this magazine is ‘Biggest’ when it’s talking about Tom Cruise’s interview. This is basically saying that this interview is better than any of the one he has done before.
