What Is Stress?

The subject of stress has become a common topic of conversation. We say we feel "burned out," stressed out, overwhelmed, angry, irritable, depressed, anxious, and on the verge of "losing it.“

Stress adds flavor, challenge and opportunity to life. Without stress, life could become quite dull and unexciting.

Stress and College Students

College life can be very stressful. Sometimes parents, faculty and others

tend to idealize their college experience

The competition for grades, the need to perform, relationships, fear of drugs, career choice, and many other aspects of the college environment cause stress.

Student life is exciting. But it can also be very pressured and stressful. A lot has

to be achieved in the limited time available.

Suggestions for Reducing Stress

Do meditation Take a Breather From Stress*

Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Deeply relax all your muscles and keep them relaxed. Breathe through your nose. Become aware of your

breathing and as you breathe out, repeat a word (such as "one") silently to yourself. Keep distracting thoughts from interfering by concentrating on repeating the word.

Continue for ten or twenty minutes. When you are done, do not stand up immediately, but sit

with your eyes open for a few minutes. 08/12/12

Relaxation Exercises

Deep Breathing When we feel stressed, it is common for our rate of breathing to increase. We also tend to breath in a shallow manner, more highly in our chest. A deep breathing exercise allows us to take fuller, slower breaths that reflect a true relaxed state.
