DESCRIPTION

The DISG Library asks itself how can we remain embedded in the information flow, find new ways to interact with students, promote information literacy, and stay engaged with the academic community. Particularly successful is a current project centred on providing tailored content on ereaders to our students.

For 600 years the academic library has

• Guaranteed the organized , delivery and preservation of printed and other content

• Provided a staff trained to support the learning, teaching and research needs and output of the university and community

• Offered an agreed schedule in which services are available

• Ensured the physical facilities necessary to support this

Then it all began to change

Page 6: Mary Joan Crowley-going mobile-london-online-2011.ppt-29nov

Seismic change

• Rising costs

• Viable alternatives in an information and networked environment on a scale no library could compete with

• Declining usage – nobody starts their search in the library building, and very few from the library website

• Generational shifts and different demands

Right here with meStudents “talk” through homework with their handheld devices, which issue alerts when passing a bookstore with material they need to cite. Scanning the title page, this information is instantly embedded in proper citation style with an added endnote. Checking in on location-based services, students locate study team members and hold impromptu meetings without the need for study rooms. Their devices have whiteboards and can share notes with absent members. http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/issues/value/futures2025.pdf

Exploit the crisis and experiment

• We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We have a great brand, now all we have to do is evolve it into the 21st century.

• Letting that fear take priority can hold ourselves and our institutions back

• Manage our resistance to change and direct it towards the critical application of new skills

Get out from behind the desk to combat disintermediation

• User engagement - go where they are• Join the conversation and figure out how to

wrrk with them and help users find what they want to find

• Create new, added-value distinctive services that have an impact on library users and library usage

• Be a content provider not just supplier • local responsiveness – embed the library

• And remember …face and place do matter and they do affect satisfaction ratings
