Theme: YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW! IGNITING THE FIRE IN SELF.

By. KAMAGARA JOSEPH – Deputy Headteacher In-charge of Academics,

Sports and Staff Welfare

What does it mean to reap what you sow?

According Galatians 6:7- 8, St. Paul has this to say; “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the spirit shall of the spirit reap life everlasting”.

Igniting the fire in self!!This is a spontaneous human combustion

(SHC) or an inner motivation that gets someone to do something.

As candidates, we already have the fire in our selves (“our bodies”), but how do we ignite the spark plug, hence the need for these academic meetings with all stakeholders, (Foundation body, School Administrators, Parents, Teachers and Students).

Students (Roles of stakeholders)You pay the consequences for whatever path you

choose in life. Whatever you do in your life it will come back to you either reward you or to haunt you!!!

According to Prof. A.B Kasozi, former National Council for Higher Education, Executive Director, “The current education system does not encourage production of knowledge through research, debate, observation or innovation”, hence the need for self - ignition to pave a path for your life.

Students: What do we have to do?

1. Time management: All the activities leading to our success must be planned and executed in that allotted time.

2. We must set priorities in our academic journey.

According to Peter Turla; “ Managing time without setting priorities is like shooting randomly and calling what you hit the target!!”

Students: Attitudinal Change!!Attitude is a predisposition or a tendency to

respond positively or negatively towards a certain idea, person or situation.

Attitude could also be an expression of favour or disfavour towards a person, place, your teacher, your parent, the school, school diet, anything or event of the school.

As a candidate student how do filter what you perceive the world surrounding you?

Attitude Change for Positive Living.Since attitude is a “relatively” enduring

organization of beliefs, feelings and behavioural tendencies towards socially significant objects, groups, events or symbols, as students we should desist from forming permanent images in our heads and hearts. When a transparent water glass is half full of water, the optimist says, “the glass is half full”, the pessimist says “the glass is half empty but an engineer says “the glass is TWICE the size it needs to be!!

Personal responsibilityDear candidates 2015, everyone of you has

something to offer and its upon you to discover what it is. A legacy has been set in Maryhill High School. Lets cooperate with teachers, parents and all stakeholders to achieve more.

A person who is responsible has a moral duty to follow through and complete assigned tasks. The state of being responsible, answerable, accountable for something within one’s power, control or management will ignite the fire in self.

Personal ResponsibilityDear candidates, the willingness to listen, the

patience to understand, the strength to support, the heart to care and just be there for your neighbour, friend is the beauty of being a LADY!

I appeal to you to be your “sister’s keeper”, so that together we can keep the star of Maryhill High School shining brightest.

Remember a lit candle lights another candle without diminishing its light intensity.

Stakeholders: CORESPONSIBILITYAll stakeholders in the academic growth of

our daughters in S.4 and S.6, we need a shared decision making. This demands a change in mindset particularly the students.

LIFE is surrounded by PEOPLE who JUDGE you day in and day out…They will talk about you when you succeed, criticize and laugh at you when you fail… They can praise you or break you, but the KEY is ….YOURSELF. “LIVE a LIFE in school, in our homes and families that pleases GOD, not people…for PEOPLE can never be pleased unless humbled and influenced by the Grace of GOD”. Just say YES I CAN.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING:Our dear candidates, we need to get credible

counselling and guidance from real trained people as we move towards our career prospects. We need wise counsel from our parents, teachers and guardians to forge our future.

According to Gen. Collin Powell, “an important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. Never receive counsel from unproductive people. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first too tell how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life.” 13

STAKEHOLDERS: PRAYERDear Lord,INTO YOUR HANDS,

I place my worries, cares, and troubles.

INTO YOUR WISDOM, I place my path, direction, and my goal.

INTO YOUR LOVE, I place my life.

SUCCESS IS OURS.

NEVER GIVE UP. Never lose hope. Always have faith, it allows you to cope. Trying times will pass as they always do.

Just have patience, your dreams will come true.

Put on a smile, you will live through your pain. Know this will pass, and strength you will gain on the VICTORY HILL.

CONCLUSIONA beautiful, educated , well – groomed woman

draws strength from troubles, smiles during distress, hard-work and grows stronger with prayers, hope and positive attitude.

William Golding had to say, “I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men, they are far superior and always have been”.

Oh Maryhill girl, “You are one of them” continue flying high with the eagles in the sky”.
