SUCCESS AT MEETING/BREAKING

CONVENTIONS (FORM)

Success at meeting conventions• We had a low budget due to us being students and independents not normally having large budgets as they are not profit driven like us. Also as our producer Warp films also has a passion to create short films as well, as this is shown through their warp films shorts programme. This shows how our producer is again not bothered for high budgets and would rather focus on the quality of the production.

• Our distribution is limited in terms of cinemas as they would be independent cinemas however we are showing it via YouTube which means anyone can access it and will be also shown at independent film festivals which is conventional. The use of digital distribution through the use of YouTube is important as it allows us to expand to a larger audience and can create hype. This also means that anyone can se it helping increase its self space. This can conform to Anderson’s long tail as our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-targeted goods and services can be as economically attractive as mainstream fare.

•We also did specify on the dialogue as it is such an important part for short films but could be argued that there isn’t as much for how long it is. We researched into the dialogue by looking at short films that were more dialogued focused. This was done so that we could make the dialogue scenes engaging and not a down point of the film. We also had the help of Josh’s uncle to help us focus on what aspects we should show, such as the difficulty of living in a post apocalyptic environment while trying to stay in a healthy relationship. The dialogue was important to the film as it was a unique focus on this genre as it would allow the audience to understand what it’s really like to survive like that emotionally, which would appeal to our sophisticated audience.

• We also had very little locations, as we only had two locations and also two actors which would keep costs down and reduce the organisation needed.

•Our plot is conventional to independents as it focuses more on the couple compared to other post apocalyptic films who base it on action making it more unique. It is also conventional to short films as the narrative structure in terms of Todorov’s equilibrium is not complete due to the new equilibrium not being found. This is conventional to short films as they normally don’t have a normal ending and the problem is normally not resolved.

Breaking conventions• We didn’t use any interesting camera techniques and just kept it basic so that the quality and cinematography was good.

• Our script was not improvisational and was create before the filming so that our actors could have time to capture the correct character for the role.

• We tried to put quite a few effects into our film to create the effects of the virus and made it more existing and engaging for the audience to watch.

•In terms of scientific dialogue I don’t believe we conformed to the convention as in a short film they would normally be accurate and create dialogue that has more scientific references to viruses to show the audience they are scientists.
