OVERVIEW

Responsibility for managing information technology is increasingly being distributed to the managers of an organization at all levels and in all functions

The internet, intranets and client/server networks drive the responsibility for managing information systems out to all of an organization’s functional and workgroup managers

Hence, the distributed management covers: Managing end user computing Managing internet access

How to manage? Create an information centre group

staffed with user liaison specialists or help desks with end user hot lines

Establish and enforce policies for the acquisition of hardware and software by ends users and business units

Establish an IST standard

MANAGING INTERNET ACCESS

Why important? Network is the prime concern at many

companies. The heavy internet use by employees can overrun the capacity of client/server networks

Issues involved The legitimate work time use of the

internet by the employee The liability for the contents of

employee email on the net

Define who has the responsibility for: granting internet access managing its use Enforcing the rules

Write conduct standards and policies on: Internet usage Educate employees

NETWORK CAPACITY ON INTERNET ACCESS

Do a baseline assessment of network capacity Access network’s current performance level Evaluate the networks demands and

performance expectations of current applications

Put into place a method for measuring the impact of internet access once it’s rolled out

Provide proper training to IS staff, to ensure they are capable of providing internet support

POLITICAL ASPECTS ON INTERNET ACCESS

Reach a consensus with the line management on how much internet access should be allowed

Get key executives to buy into the company’s internet plan

Make sure the non-IS Department Heads know of the Internet plan. Their budgets likely will have to support the network expansion needed to handle the increased load
