When considering the style for a commercial radio advert, the producer chooses music for the purpose that it fits the theme of the product being advertised. The producers will pick music that goes with the style and this could be formal or informal and they could have the advert in a pastiche or comic style as an example. From choosing the music they need to have the permission in order to use it, by doing this they will not be sued for copyright from the artist or music label. The Performing Right Society also known as PRS, represents their songwriters, composers and music publisher members preforming rights and collect royalties that means each time their music or performing publicly is used they get paid from people or radio stations using it. The Performing Right Society allows radio stations to use any music they cover. The Radio Advertising Production Music License give unlimited access to radio stations to use their member’s music. The license covers radio stations that make their own radio advertisements and commercials and also the commission radio producers to make adverts for them.

Fair Use- The term fair use in copyright means that it allows the radio producer and any involved music to be used on the copyright terms in which to use a certain song they will have to pay the producer and/or label to have the permission of use.

Licensing- Companies such as the PRS; The Performing Rights Society for music gives licenses to radio station producers so they can use music in their commercial radio adverts as members of the PRS.

7 Second Rule- Radio advertisers often use what is called the “7 second rule” in which means that they can include any chosen song as long as it plays for 7 seconds or less, as otherwise the radio station would be sued for copyright as there is not permission for using the whole song.

Strategies- Without permission radio producers cannot use an artist’s music even though license fees can be expensive but there are ways to reduce the cost of the license. This could be that they create their own music to use by hiring a musician or they could purchase the copyright to a song but have someone else to preform it other than the original artist.
