13) Collect Magazines• As you can see I have brought 3 magazines related with music,

and I made sure the music of the magazine is a genre that I am

keen on, so that it would be easier and more comfortable for me

to work with. I have selected ‘Kerrang’, ‘Metal Hammer’ & ‘Mojo’.

These are all of similar parts of music, as they are all rock and

roll related, but all the front covers, contents layouts, and double

page story’s are different, and they are laid out differently,

which is why they were so good to analyse.

14) Front Cover Analysis

Page 3: Music Magazine Research

Metal Hammer Front Cover•As you can see the magazine is entitled ‘Metal Hammer’, it is a heavy metal music magazine, aimed to keep rock and roll fans updated with the latest gossip, news and stories. You can tell a lot about the magazine just from the front cover, to start with the masthead. The masthead predictably placed at the top of the page, is the word Hammer horizontally across the top of the page and is white, the word Metal is vertically placed inside the letter H (of hammer) and is black. To make it look even more rock and roll the word hammer is wrapped in chains, which is signifying that it’s gothic and metal. Next there is the main image, which is of a band named Disturbed, who are posing in a psychotic way, looking almost mental, the poses they are doing you immediately relate with rock music, as rock is seen as out of control and mental. Another thing that makes the main image come across as mental, is the skeleton located in the bottom right corner, which is in a cloak and is tied up in black straps, almost like a straight jacket. As you know skeletons are related with rock music, and it links to the image of the band above it, psychotic and mad. The bands logo is also plastered across the main image, just to inform the reader who they are looking at. The main image strongly ties in with the pull quote of the cover, which states “out of the asylum”, which is written in bold, capital red letters, to make them stand out. This quote is related with the main image because they all look crazy and mental, and an asylum is where mental people are kept, but this is a metaphor, as it doesn’t mean they are literally out of an asylum, it means they are back and hungry for success, and they are going to explode onto the music scene. Another pull quote written just under the previous one mentioned, follows a similar style to quote mentioning an asylum. It states, “EVERYONE AROUND ME DIES!”… This is written in bold white writing, and again is in capitals, making it stand out more. This is a very outrageous quote again linking to the psychotic theme of the band. Again this is a metaphor, as they will not literally kill everyone, it’s just a phrase that they are using to sound explosive and dangerous. This in my opinion has worked, and will give readers a full view of what the band are like, and the theme of what they will be reading. There is no text on the cover referring to a lead article or cover lines, which makes the reader assume the main attraction of this magazine will be the band in the picture, Disturbed. This magazine cover although brief and not giving much information, has been very well laid out, and I think this will make readers want to open this and read the story’s.

Page 4: Music Magazine Research

MOJO Front Cover•This magazine is entitled MOJO, it is a music magazine that gives you news from many eras of music including as far back as the 60s, but also give you updates of the latest music crazes. This magazine cover is a jam packed one. First of all the skyline includes 3 things, which all link to the same story. First of all in a gold circle in the left top corner, is says about a free CD. Then next to that it gives you information but very brief, about what will be on the free CD. It states that the CD contains “Stevie Wonder + The 70 best soul albums of the ‘70s!”… This is giving the reader quick information about what will be on this free gift, and they tell you one of the biggest stars who will be on there, they also put a photo of Stevie Wonder in the top right corner next to this, to give the reader more attractions towards the gift and buying the magazine. Second of all the masthead is very bog standard, but very effective. It’s written in large capital letters, and spreads across the whole top section of the cover, its black text, and the background of the whole magazine is a subtle white. The masthead is on the bottom layer, so everything which has been placed around it or on top of it, and is over lapping the masthead. This is a common effect used with many magazine covers. Third of all is the main image, this image is of one of the greatest rock stars of all time, but he has had an unordinary photo taken of him, it’s not a colourful glam dressed up image. It’s a black and white formal photo, he’s wearing a smart leather jacket, and he has a serious look on his face, yet he still looks like an old rock star, despite acting serious. The main image has been placed as the top layer as it overlaps everything else on the page, which makes the main image the main attraction of the cover, and clearly related with the lead article and pull quote. The pull quote of the magazine has not been quoted by the subject of the main image, but however it is anchored with him, as it says “Robert Plant Reborn!” This could be suggesting many things about the subject, it could be that he is starting a new project and it’s a new Robert Plant, or he is a new person, it could mean a number of things, but this is what pulls the reader to the magazine. The next thing that links in with the main image is the lead article, this is informing the reader what his new project is, but keeping it blunt, to make you buy the magazine for more information. The lead article says, “From Led Zep to Country Rock!” This article will attract the reader, as they will see that he has changed his style from rock and roll icon, to a country rock star. This will make the reader inquisitive, and want to read the article. This is also in the left third, which means it will be a main thing that the customer will see on a shop shelf, which is important. The next thing about this front cover is that there is a high number of cover lines, as they do in the lead article they only give brief information away, but they give enough information in the lines to make the reader want to read what is happening. The front cover of the magazine has 12 cover lines, including: “Foals, Jimmy Webb, Grizzly Bear, Steve Winwood, Hawkwind, The XX, Arcade Fire Return!, The coral freak out, VAN Morrison astral weeks revisited, Phil Collins bares his soul”… So as you can see there are lot of cover lines and little information about what you will be reading about, but gives the reader a strong idea of what they will be reading about in the magazine. It also informs the reader that there will be 33 pages of reviews, this will be of newly released albums, new bands, concert reviews etc. So from that I can conclude that this magazine is not for a young audience, but for a lot older audience, as it includes many bands and artists, that young people will not have heard of. Although this magazine is jam packed, I think the layout if very effective and gives a clear overview of what will be in the magazine. My favourite factor, is the colour scheme, the style of the text and the background, and the fact that black gold grey and white are the only colours used, has kept it simple and well presented.

Page 5: Music Magazine Research

Kerrang Front Cover First of all the skyline of the magazine instantly attracts the readers eye, as the first part is a competition and offers you free tickets

to one of two festivals, and the second part is briefly quoting about an update of a band member of Madina Lake, but know one will know what this is about, as it could be about a simple update of the band, or it could something personal about the member, which will make the reader curious and want to read the magazine, this is an instant attraction of the magazine. Next there is the masthead of the magazine, which says a lot about the theme of the magazine, there are 2 horizontal lines over and under the text coloured red, the text spelling the title of the magazine ‘Kerrang!’. its in thin black letters, and has a white effect of smashed windows across the letters , which blends in with the white background. This is a rock and roll effect and is strongly related with the context of the magazine. Then there is the main image of the front cover, which is of a bad named KoRN, and this is clearly stated by there logo slapped in the middle of the photo. The photo consists of the 4 band members, although there dressed rock and roll style and the picture is in colour, they all have serious looks on their faces and the photo looks dull, which makes the reader think, this may not be a usual rock headline, and that it may be a serious article. This links in with the pull quote and also the main article, as the pull quote reads, “I wanted to kill myself”... This is written in white text inside a black text box. This is suggesting that the star of the band has said this, and has had a rough time of it, and his bands expressions back up this quote. The main image as I also mentioned links in with the main article, which quotes, “Their journey to hell and back”... This again is in white text and inside a black text box, keeping a consistent theme. This suggests the band haven’t literally been to hell and back, but is a metaphor, saying that they have been through hell in the music business, and have struggled heavily. Which will make the reader want to read and be informed of the story. More importantly this relates with the main image, as there glum expressions back up this quote of there journey to hell and back. This quote doesn’t give a lot away, but it does give a brief insight to the mood of the interview. The next thing the front cover includes are many cover lines, 4 to be precise, but these 4 cover lines are giving information about a story within the magazine, there is also 1 with runs along the bottom of the page, which advertises 10 bands, gives no information, just states in white text with a black backdrop, 10 bands names. Also on the left to the bands names, it has a big red cross, which means like and also we have these bands in the magazine, and the reader will clearly know what this means. Getting back to the main cover lines, the first one is located on top of the main image in a small red square, it gives a brief statement about two bands grouping together, it says, “Stone Sour and Avenged Sevenfold team up”... This has been written in white text with a black back drop, within the red outlined box. This keeps in with the theme of the cover style wise. This cover line gives little away, but you can hypothesise that it means the 2 bands are teaming together for a project or a tour etc, this will make the reader want to read on. Another brief cover line is one located directly opposite to the stone sour one, it clearly states, “the UK’s biggest gig guide!”... This has been written in a red circle, which has a frayed effect and looks scratched, this is keeping with the metal theme of the magazine. The text its self had been written in white bold text. This is stating that they give you the most information about gigs going on in the UK, which is a bold statement to make, which means the magazine cover is confident and they want the reader to believe them and read there magazine. The next cover line is a gossip one, and is personal, and they even state there being personal with the statement, it says, “Josh’s feet stink, you me at six getting personal”... this as you can instantly see is a jokey article, aimed at the reader to see some comedy, as you can clearly see this josh person is a band member, and his band have jokingly claimed his feet smell, this is to show some humour on the cover and not all serious headlines. The words were written in white text, but one half is in a black text box, and one half is in a red text box, this is contrasting to colours which have been regularly used on the front cover of the magazine. The last cover line starts with a quote, then has brief information underneath it, the quote has been written in white text with a black back drop, and states, “This is the end”... This could mean many things, it could be the end of a band, the end of someone’s life, that’s why the information has been put underneath it, to give a little more information away. The information underneath the quote is white in a red text box, it explains to the reader what the quote means, it says, “Tony Iommi on Dio tribute show”... This is telling the reader that a man has died, who is clearly big in the music scene, named Dio, and a man named Tony Iommi is giving information about a tribute how for the deceased man named Dio. This suggests that it will be an interview, and it will be an emotional one, and that he’s been chosen for a reason to talk about it, this will all be explained in the magazine, and this will make the reader want to buy it. Lastly there is an advertisement of sort on the front cover, located in the bottom half of the magazine, it states that there is a poster special on an event called ‘T in the park’, this has been written in red and black text, and above these words are 5 small pictures of posters that inside the magazine, and titles of the bands or artists on the pictures, this is just another reason to make the reader to buy the magazine, offering the reader free gifts such as posters, this is a convincing way to sell the magazine.

15) Contents Page analysis

Page 7: Music Magazine Research

MOJO Contents page•The MOJO magazine contents page, is very brief, but its eye catching in many ways. First of you notice the background, which is a burst of colour, mainly a canary yellow which covers 3 corners of the page, but also a shallow green colour, which fades off of the yellow into an opposite corner, creating a bright effect. This shows the theme of the magazine, it is classic rock music and vintage rock music, not a heavy metal magazine or a rap music magazine. So the background colour is important. Next is the heading of the contents page, which is the title of the magazine, it clearly states ‘MoJo’, and underneath it says, ‘London, Memphis, Hoylake. They have all been written in black text. This suggests that these 3 destinations have something linked together to do with the magazine, but this is not made clear anywhere on the magazine. Underneath this it states the month and year, ‘September 2010’, and next to that it states the issue number, ‘issue 202’. This is factual information for the reader, so they know what issue and what month they have brought the magazine. This has been displayed in black text. The next thing that you see is a list which consists of 6 main stories all with linking page numbers. First there is a page number arranged to the left of the headline of the story. The story headlines are written in big bold text, and followed with more information and quotes in small black text. They are well spaced out and take up little room. They make it clear which story is the most important out of the six as it has red lines horizontally under and over it, and it’s captioned with ‘Cover Line’ in thin red text. So that is the textual level of the contents page. In the bottom half of the magazine there is a pictorial level, there is a photograph of a band, who are called ‘The Coral’ they have been made another focus point of the contents page, as they are the only photo on the page. There is a quote located above the picture, which relates with one of the 6 main stories which has a directed page number. It says, “What do we do when the music’s over? Nothing because it never is.”… This quote is very strong and very eye catching, as its saying that music will never die, and they are confident about saying it, this will make readers want to read their story, and it clearly says underneath it P.46 is where the story is located. So this is a very simple contents page, but it has been very cleverly done, and has been structured perfectly.

Page 8: Music Magazine Research

Kerrang Contents page•As you can see the Kerrang contents page is very much cluttered and in your face. To start with the top half of the page is mainly of a pictorial level, but has some text. It says in the top left corner of the page in a black text box, ‘Contents’ this is written in scratched yellow text, underneath that in smaller letters it says, ‘issue no:1321, Cover date: 17/07/10’ This has been written in white text. In the top right corner there is a white text box which has the words ‘You Me At Six’ written in it in black text, and on the left of the words you me at six in a red circle is the number 40, stating that that band is featured on page 40. This is linking to the image which covers the top half of the page, which is the band You me at six, and loads of their fans sitting and standing around them, so this suggests that they are a big feature of the magazine, as they have covered half of the contents page. Next is the bottom half of the contents page, which is mainly of a textual level, and has little photos at all. First it has in a black bannered text box which stretches across the page, the Kerrang logo in white, which the smashed window effect. Then next to that in yellow text are the words, ‘This Week’. This is a title of such stating what will be in the magazine. The next thing you see if a picture of the editor, which is small up close profile photo, which has a long stretch of text underneath it giving her views on rock music this week and facts about the magazine, underneath all that is her signature and the words ‘EDITOR’. This makes her a big part of the magazine, and they have made this clear. Next to this piece of text they have the listings and the page numbers for the articles in the magazine, the page numbers are written in red text on the left of the name of the band or the title of the story, the titles or band names are all written in capital letters, and in bold black text. However certain page numbers are in different categories, and they are clearly stated with text above them. The text is in a small black text box, and in yellow text. For example above page number 4, it says, ‘FEEDBACK’. Above pages 06, 08, 10 & 14, it says ‘NEWS’. Then there are other categories, such as ‘WIN’, ‘LIVE REVIEWS’, ‘FEATURES’, ‘ALBU REVIEWS’, ‘GIG GUIDE’ & ‘THE K! QUIZ’. All of these clearly show the reader what the content of the stories or text is. There are 2 photographs located in the bottom half of the page, one is in the listings of the page numbers, it says, “T in the park poster special”… and has a photo of a man holding a guitar, which suggests he is one of the main posters that you will get in the magazine. Then in the other photo there is a man holding his head, he is located under the last story in the page numbers, he is looking confused, which related with the story, as he is taking the Kerrang quiz, which refers to him thinking and being put to the test. The last part of the magazine, is an advertisement, which is located in the bottom right corner of the page, which has 3 covers of the Kerrang magazine, and next to it telling you how you can subscribe to a monthly subscription of having the magazine delivered to your door, which is appropriate, as they are trying to sell the magazine more, and it’s in the contents, where everyone will see it.

Page 9: Music Magazine Research

Metal Hammer Contents page•The metal hammer contents page is based on a white background, and is a mixture of textual levels, and pictorial levels. To start with you have in frayed black text, Contents, which is written in the top left corner above everything. Under this it says September 2010 issue no 209, this is written in a horizontal red text box, and the text is in pearly white. Next to the words contents is a photo of the front cover, but this photo is very minuscule, but as you have already seen the front cover and scanned it, you will know what the photo is of. Under the title and preferences, is the lists of story’s and titles of the pages, these are written in black text, and are in a frayed font, which makes it look more rock, and ties in with the theme of the magazine. On the left hand side of each title of each story, is a page number, which locates you to the correct page for the story. These are all in red and are lined up the length of the page. Each story has a small description in red and black text underneath, which is only brief, but gives the reader a slight bit of information relevant to the stories. Underneath the page numbers list are 2 small photos, which are of double page spreads, although you cannot see the writing on these spreads, you can see the people in them, and the titles of the stories. These give you a rough insight to what you will be reading. Next they give you more information about what will be in the magazine, such as reviews of festivals, bands, gigs, albums, songs etc, and these are in 2 small text boxes, one is black, and one is red, these tie in with the theme as most of the magazine is black white or red, which are rock colours, and metal colours. In the left bottom corner is a girl wearing obscene clothing, and very underdressed, again linking with the metal theme, and this is titled with words ‘Hammer Merch’ Which means she’s sporting clothing that they are advertising clothing for the magazine. This is the last page number featured on the contents page. Next they have a whole spread, which covers the whole right hand side of the contents page, which is words from the editor. The reader can straight away see that this is a weekly thing, and he analyses a new story every edition, this months, he has captioned his story, “The dark lord speaks…Listen to Black Sabbath.”… This is a bold headline, which states that he likes them and he advises the reader to listen to them, this has been written in bold white text, which again is of a frayed font. The whole background is a black/brown colour, and covers the whole right hand side of the page. Underneath the title of the editors monologue, he has written a huge explanation of why Black Sabbath are such an awe inspiring band, and why you should be listening to them, he has spoken passionately about experiences with the band and other things. This has been written in white font, and the first letter of the paragraph has been punctually made to stand out, as its big, Red and bold. He finishes the story with the quote, ‘Stay Metal’, this has been written in red text. Then at the very bottom of the page under all the text, he has signed it and written ‘Editor’ in bold red text, to show he’s important to the magazine. There are 3 pictures located in the right hand side of the article, one is captioned with white text stating,’ Jack Coleman from killing joke, the new album is killer”… This is a quote backing up what the editor writes about the band black Sabbath. The picture is of 2 men, who look very metal, and are making rock symbols. The other photo is of a member of the black Sabbath band and the editor himself, this is a picture linking with the article, and he has entitled the picture in white text, ‘The king and I’. This contents page is extremely keeping with the heavy metal theme it had on the front page, and this is very clear with every little aspect throughout.

16) Double Page Spread Analysis

Page 11: Music Magazine Research

Kerrang Double Page Spread

Page 12: Music Magazine Research

Kerrang Double Page Spread Analysis The first thing you notice about the double page spread in Kerrang, is the way the main article has been laid out, it has been

laid out identical to how it had been laid out on the front cover, this gives a sense of house style. For example the white on black theme on the pull quote for the article, it is identical to the one used on the front cover, it states very blunt and obscene words from what is presumed the lead singer of the band. He quotes, “You’re listening to me losing my fucking mind!”… The fact that we know its been quoted is that its in speech marks. This is a pull quote for many reasons, mainly as you can straight away deter that him saying your listening to me losing my fucking mind, means that were reading and listening to his story, of his hell ride, and how hard he’s had life. He has just been creative with the way he has said it, which will pull readers into reading the article. This was a creative thing to put rather then putting a headline on this page. Next the lead image doesn’t quite encapsulate the attitude or mood of the band, as again the same as the front cover, the lead singer looks miserable and serious, he doesn’t look metal and rock star, he looks unhappy and fed up, this links with the main image from the front cover, his expression hasn’t changed, the serious intensity is still there, the only thing that's different is that he is moving his arm in a pose to the right of him, not signifying anything, but maybe so he’s not standing so still, and looking so boring. There are 2 other images across the 2 page spread, which are not main images, but they strongly link in with the serious theme that the article portrays. There is another image of the band to the right, but a lot smaller then the main image, again there expressions are similar to that of the front cover, defeated, serious, and not at all rock and roll, the only exception is one member making a rock symbol with his hands and looking slightly manic, but generally this photo ties in with the bands mindset for this interview, which is a serious and un rock like side of the band. The last photo is located in the middle of the double page spread, and again is smaller, it is of a member of the band, and again repeating the theme of seriousness through the images and words, he looks glum and fed up. He is also wearing black sunglasses perhaps to hide his eyes, which are the best way to convey emotion, this is a clever effect used by the photographer. The journalist introduces the article in a very formal way, discussing the problems the band has faced, but also mentioning there fame, this is a strong way to open the article. He uses formal language for a high proportion of the article, but he also uses some slang words, when quoting the band or talking in a rock and roll style language. The journalist uses many direct quotes, as the article is part interview with the band members, he either has questions, or quotes they have about the ordeal they have been through with music. They would be happy with what the journalist has written as it shows another side of them, not a metal side telling stories about there tours, it tells the reader about there crazy road of depression. This has been written well so the band will like what the journalist has written. There are very few Photoshop techniques used that I would want to use, however, the style that the smaller photos have been laid out I really like, as it looks professional. It’s been placed inside a black lined text box which has been slightly tilted to look unordinary and rock (rebel style). This has been done by placing the photo into a black outlined box, tilting the angle slightly, then ordering it as the front layer, and positioning it around your other images, headline, pull quotes and articles. That is the only technique I would use from this double page spread from Kerrang magazine.

Page 13: Music Magazine Research

MOJO Double Page Spread

Page 14: Music Magazine Research

MOJO Double Page Spread Analysis The double page spread in MOJO is half picture led, and half text led, half of the 2 pages are covered in photos of the history of the

subject Robert Plant, and half textual, again on the subject of Robert Plant. On the double page spread I selected there are 4 columns of text, all about Robert Plant. The 4 columns of text are black text with a white background, keeping with the theme of the magazine cover, but not the contents page, as there’s not as much colour. The photographs used are all of Robert Plant and his new musical companions practicing in an empty arena, they have chose to take these photographs of the band in an empty arena over a full one, to create more of a chilled atmosphere, and not him sweating and rocking. Similar to the front cover, he’s relaxed and serious, and not looking as rock as he did in his younger years. There is another photograph located on the right hand side of the double page spread, it is of Robert Plant in his younger years, with 3 members of his old band, and John Bonham, and it’s clearly shown by text above the photograph. This is to create an effect of showing what he has done in his career and who he has worked with. Robert is always positioned behind his microphone, but not every image is of him, there are many of the new people he is working with, so the photographer has chosen to display not just Robert Plant, but his whole new project. The photos tie in with what seems to be the theme of the project, a relaxed but hippy style, an old rock spectacle. The connotative meanings of these photos that they are trying to get across to the reader, is that Plant is not the rocker he used to be, and that he’s more relaxed, and working on new stuff, and the photos really show this emotion, as the reader will see how laid back the place is that they are practicing at, and will see how changed Robert Plant is. There is no headline featured on the page that I have chosen, which means the only thing passing a piece of information on is the pull quote given. The pull quote has been said by Robert Plant himself, that much is obvious, and they have kept the colour theme similar to the front cover, but not the contents page, they have used 3 colours in the text changing at random times, they use gold white and grey, with a black background. The pull quote is located in the centre of the left hand side of the double page spread. It states “I’m aware of the passing of time. I just like learning and being a little bit out of my depth.”… This quote as I mentioned is from Robert Plant himself, and the pull quote of the spread does relate to the whole article, as in the article he’s talking about how he’s done so many things but how there now in the past, which relates to the passing of time. He also says in the quote about him being out of his depth, and in the article he mentions about success not even being in his sights when he was younger, and how he never would have taken it for granted or basked in it if he had got it, this relates strongly to the pull quote. The way that the journalist has introduced the interview is using Roberts own words, and catchy lines, which he can easily build on and write more and more about. He uses a very descriptive language, mainly as he’s mentioning dates, people’s names and destinations of when Plant did all these wonderful things. So he goes into great detail, and that’s what makes the interview so descriptive, the language is describing where and what Robert did, and he uses clever connectives and metaphors throughout. The journalist also uses many quotes towards the beginning of the article, he uses quotes of from before Plant joint Led Zeppelin, and he also uses quotes from when he was working with many different people, mainly John Bonham. Towards the main part of the article, its mainly Robert Plant talking, but the journalist is asking questions to Robert, but it’s not been laid out like an interview, more or a free flow conversation, and the way this has been laid out has made Plant look really good, and that will make the reader think positively of what he’s doing etc. So the journalist isn’t really using quotes, more of long winded conversation, and letting Robert Plant talk about memories and his past etc. There are a few things that I would use personally for my magazine, such as the layout, I could make this easily in Photoshop using layering tools and separating the photos from the text carefully. Overall this is one of my favourite magazine articles, I just love the layout, the textual sections and pictorial sections, it’s how I would want to lay my article out.

Page 15: Music Magazine Research

Metal Hammer Double Page Spread

Page 16: Music Magazine Research

Metal Hammer Double Page Spread Analysis The double page spread that I have selected from metal hammer links in with the main article from the front cover, as it’s the article

about the band. As you can see the double page spread is mainly pictorial led, as there is little text, and a photograph of the band which fills the whole 2 pages, but as im sure the reader will realise, this is only the start of the article, so the image should be the main focus of the first double spread of the interview. It has been laid out so that the image is the main focus of the 2 pages. There are 2 paragraphs of text explaining the content of the article, which has been written in white, which contrasts perfectly with the photograph background. Underneath this the editor has put 3 columns of text, again in white, which contain the actual interview with the band, and the stories they have to tell the world. The columns have been organised so that they are directly under the information paragraphs, and the whole block of text is in the right bottom corner, so not obscuring the main image, the headline, or the pull quote. On this double page spread there is only one image used, The image is of the band standing in front of what’s believed to be a cathedral, the 3 member in the back drop are looking normal, and focused on the camera, however the lead singer has a manic expression, has his hands tied up in chains, and is in the foreground. It’s a powerful image that links with the front cover main image of the band very strongly, it portrays the band as crazy, and slightly psychotic, especially when they have been placed in front of such a old gothic church. The front cover portrayed the band as crazy, mental and slightly scary, this picture doesn’t do them any justice, and keeps continues this theme. The portrayal of the main image ties in with the band strongly, as they are a metal band, and are showing there loud, heavy, and crazy. The connotative meaning of this photo is that they are angry, and psychotic, the way they have presented themselves is giving the reader that idea. Next is the headline, the language used in the headline is brief and snappy, its 3 simple words, “Piece of Mind”… This is not a direct quote from the band, but one that has been chosen by the editor/journalist. The headline uses a language features such as figure of speech and a metaphor, as he’s not literally giving them a piece of his mind, it just him telling the readers what he’s been through and what the band are doing etc. The headline is in a bold white text, and is surrounded by what seems to be the outlines of a green smoky man, and this surrounds the middle of the headline, for an eerie effect which ties in with the overall theme of the article and the band. I think this all does tie in with the overall house style of the magazine. Next is the pull quote, they use one and it has been placed in the left bottom corner of the spread, it states, “It was the perfect storm. My fiancée had left me, my friend screwed me, and my dog died, David Draiman”… This quote has been taken directly from the main star of the band, this is very clear to the reader, but however it doesn’t tie in with the front cover statements, as they sounded cheerful and powerful, where as this is depressing and sad, but however it ties in with the article, as the singer is expressing what he has been through. So the lead article does tie in with the article on the double page spread. The journalist opens the article with a quote from a black Sabbath song, “finished with my women, wailed the great Ozzy Osbourne in 1970.”… He then explains how David Draiman has also had an ordeal with women and other things, and that’s how he’s introduced it, this is a strong way to do so, using quote that is relevant. There are many quotes as I mentioned used in the beginning of the article, but when it gets into the article, its laid out as an interview, and no more quotes are used, it’s just questions from the journalist, then long winded answers from the band. They portray the band in a good way, as its all positive questions, and a lot of banter, which means the band will be looking good, and the reader will be more like to read on and support the band. There have been many techniques used in Photoshop that I would like to use myself when I make my magazine, such as the smoky effects around text creating shapes, also the editing on the main image, the eeriness etc. This and MOJO are my 2 favourite double page spread layouts.
