My Job Skills Interview with

Lead Hand Custodian at WODSS
What does a Lead Hand Do, Anyway?
The Facility Part
Ensures that the school is safe and clean for the kids and staff
Organizes rental space for the community
The Facility Part con’t
Acts as supply warehouse for feeder schools in Wilmot
Performs general maintenance on the school building (plumbing and electrical)
The People Part
Supervises the night staff Covering for absences in the other
“family of school” locations Trains new people
What does a “typical” shift look like?
Things we see Maintenance (fixing things that break) Cleaning assigned areas (where
confidential information is kept)
Things we might not notice (unless they stop working)
Regular fire alarm checks, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting
Weekly (or more often) water quality testing, flushing out the system
Help the other custodians if they are running behind
Education and Training
High school!!! Good work experience

Wages and Hours
8 hour shift, 5 nights a week (3:30-11:30 pm)
New hires = only part timers at $18.00 Takes 2 years after being hired for
permanent custodian to rise to the top of the pay grid (just because you work full time hours doesn’t mean you are permanent)
Good pension, sick days, family care days, health benefits plan
Personality Type Needed:
Problem solver (have to figure out how to fix things without many resources)
Personality Type Needed:
good at giving direction so that other people want to do what you say
Personality Type Needed:
Good with details (lots of documenting) use math when you are mixing
chemicals—you need to understand the ratios and to be able to visualize space
