Glossary Denominator: Bottom number of a fraction indicating how many parts make a whole Divisor: The number after the division sign in a division problem, (i.e. 12÷7); or the

bottom number of a fraction. Equivalent Fraction: Fractions that are found by multiplying the numerators and

denominators by the same number Factor: Numbers equal to or less than a given number that divides the number evenly.

For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 Fraction: Any number written in the form of one whole number over another, (5/3) ,

indicating number of parts being considered over the number of parts that make one whole.

Fraction Bar: The line separating the numerator and denominator in a fraction Improper Fraction Any fraction with the numerator larger than the denominator Mixed Number: A whole number and a fraction. (i.e. 3) Multiple: (Similar to the "times table.") A multiple of a given number is equal to the given

number or greater. Numerator: The top number of a fraction. It indicates how many parts of a certain size

are represented Quotient: The solution to a division problem. Reducing: Dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number to get an

equivalent fraction. Most fraction problems should be expressed reduced to “simplest terms”;

Remainder: The number left after a whole number division problem is complete. When converting an improper fraction to a mixed number, the remainder is the numerator of the fraction.

Whole numbers can also be broken down into parts of a whole, such as a half, a quarter or an eighth. Those numbers are called fractions and written out like this: ½, meaning one half. A fraction can also be represented in decimal form. Decimal form doesn't change the value of the number, it's just another way writing it.

Fractions are made up of two parts, the numerator and the denominator. The numerator is the top half of the fraction, while the denominator is the bottom half

Decimal - Any number shown with a decimal point; a number based upon tenths or hundredths. ( 0.2, 0.375, 86.4)

Fraction - One or more of the equal parts of a whole; a number usually expressed in the form a/b. ( 1/3, 2 5/8, 7/4 )

Percent- The word percent comes from Latin and means “ for each hundred” or “ per hundred.” ( 70%, 6.5%, 4.09%)

Method 1◦ Step 1: Find a number you can

multiply by the bottom of the fraction to make it 10, or 100, or 1000, or any 1 followed by 0s.

◦ Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by that number.

◦ Step 3: Then write down just the top number, putting the decimal point in the correct spot (one space from the right hand side for every zero in the bottom number)

Method 2◦ Simply divide the top number

(numerator) by the bottom number (Denominator)

◦ Do this until you get a decimal that terminates or repeats.

Example 1: Express 3/4 as a Decimal

Step 1: We can multiply 4 by 25 to become 100

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 25:

= =

Step 3: Write down 75 with the decimal point 2 spaces from the right (because 100 has 2 zeros);

Example 2: Convert 3/4 to a decimal

3/4 = 3÷4= 0.75 ( terminating decimal)

Example 3: Convert 2/3 to a decimal

2/3= 2÷3= 0.66 ( repeating decimal )

Converting Decimals to FractionsStep 1- Place the number that follows the decimal

point over the place that it is in (tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.).

Step 2: Simplify if necessary.

Example 1: Convert 0.7 to a fraction

0.7= 7/10 ( 7 is in the tenths place )

Example 2: Convert 0.25 to a fraction

0.25= 25/100= 1/4 ( 25 is in the hundredths place. 1/4 is the simplified form of 25/100)

Example 3: Convert 1.625 to a fraction

1.625= 1 625/1000= 1 5/8 ( 625 is in the thousandths place. 5/8 is the simplified form of 625/1000)

Method 1Step 1: To convert a fraction to a percent, change the fraction to a decimal ( by dividing the numerator by the denominator ).

Step 2: multiply the decimal by 100 and put a percent sign (%).

Or

Move the decimal point two places to the right and put a percent sign (%).

Example 1: Convert 1/2 to a percent

1/2= 1÷ 2 = 0.50

0.50x 100= 50.00=50%

or

0.50= 0. 5 0= 50%

Example 2: Convert 1/3 to a percent

1/3= 1÷3= 0.333

0.333x 100= 33.300=33.3%

or

0.333=0. 3 3 3=33.3%

Convert in equivalent percent form.

Step 1: Change the percent to a decimal by dividing the percent by 100 or move the decimal point two places to the left.

Step 2: put the numbers behind the decimal point over the place that it is in ( tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.).

Step 3: simplify if necessary.

Example 1: Convert 85% to a fraction85% = 85÷ 100= 0.85

= 85/100= 17/20 Simplest Form

Example 2: Convert 12.5% to a fraction

12.5%= 12.5÷ 100= 0.125

= 125/1000=1/8 (125 is in the thousandths place. 1/8 is the simplified form of 125/1000 )
