DESCRIPTION

Multi-material kits are found in many library collections. From educational activity kits to test prep kits, these items consist of many different types of materials, and cataloging them can present some unique challenges. In this session, Emily Nimsakont, the NLC’s Cataloging Librarian, will share some tips to keep in mind when cataloging a kit.

What is a kit?

• “An item containing two or more categories of material, no one of which is identifiable as the predominant constituent of the item”

• “A single-medium package of textual material”

Where do you find the rules for cataloging kits?

• Kits do not have a chapter of their own in AACR2

• Instructions for working with kits are scattered throughout other chapters

• Rule 1.10 is about “items made up of several types of materials”

• Rules in Chapter 10 (Three-Dimensional Artifacts) can apply

• The chief source of information is the whole item.

• Information can be taken from anywhere on the item.
