The Stern Grove Festival Association received a $35,000 grant in 2013 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support its free concerts and educational programs in San Francisco.
Steven Haines, executive director of the Stern Grove Festival, said, “We appreciate this national recognition of our vital role in the community and our mission to keep the arts accessible to all."
Founded in 1938, the festival hosts a series of concerts each summer in an outdoor amphitheater in Sigmund Stern Grove park. The original guidelines for the festival required that all concerts be free for the public to enjoy, high-quality performances, and that the music that would appeal to a diverse audience. In 2014, the festival will present its 77th season.
Nearly 900 nonprofit organizations across the United States receive NEA grants, which support memorable experiences and education programs that engage the public with the arts. The grants total $23.4 million.
