Introduction to network
• Benefits of network
File sharing.
Printer sharing.
Internet connection sharing.

Introduction to network
Two common types of networks:
Local Area Network (LAN).
Wide Area Network (WAN).
Local Area Network
small area.
School, or building.
Wide Area Network
Connect networks in larger
geographic areas.
4
Introduction to network
Network architecture
The two major types of network operating systems are:
Peer-to-Peer
Client/Server
Peer-to-peer
All computers are considered equal.
Same OS.
Advantages:
Less expense.
Setup.
Disadvantages:
Decentralized.
Does not provide the security.
5
Introduction to network
Advantages:
Centralized.
Disadvantages :
Expense.
Dependence - When server goes
down, operations will cease
across the network.
Client - Server
Centralize
provide security.
Windows Servers OS.

Introduction to network
Physical network topologies
The physical topology of a network refers to the configuration of cables, computers.
Linear Bus

Introduction to network
Linear Bus
Advantages
Easy to connect a computer .
Requires less cable length.
Disadvantages
Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
Terminators are required.
Difficult to identify the problem.

Introduction to network
Star
Advantages
Easy to install and wire.
No disruptions to the network when
connecting or removing devices.
Disadvantages
Requires more cable length.
If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails,
nodes attached are disabled.
9
Introduction to network
Ring
Advantages
Token helps to reduces chances of
collision.
all the traffic flows in only one direction
at very high speed.
Disadvantages
Each packet of data must pass through all
the computers.
If one workstation or port goes down, the
entire network gets affected.
MAU’s and network cards are expensive as
compared to Ethernet cards and hubs.
