Hey Apple, Don't Break My iPod!

View Current Signatures - Sign the Petition

To: Apple Computer

Dear Apple,

Your company has long stood for innovation and open competition. Wasn't it Apple that ran the famous Super Bowl ad encouraging consumers like us to stand up for our right to make our own choices? We're asking that you do the same now and support the right of your own customers to make their own choices about where they buy music for the iPod. We want Freedom of Music Choice! Don't lock us in to purchasing digital music from one source. That's bad for competition. It will stifle innovation. And it will slow the adoption of digital music devices like the iPod.

Do the right thing. Stand with us for Freedom of Music Choice!

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Apple has a strategy, it started with a vision years and years ago, it was driven by an idea that Apple picked up and made very successful, they have a long term plan and people trust that they will be around for a while, other companies such and Real, Napster and Buymusic, their plans hatched as a result of the original success of Apple, their counterfeiting an idea, not making it better.

July 4, 2005: Jarvis posts a fellow blogger’s finding that Dell’s PR company claims to monitor the blogosphere. “There are an estimated 9 million blogs today, but which ones matter to you? It’s our job not only to tell you, but to help you negotiate that terrain.” (February, 2003)

July 11, 2005: Dell shuts down its online customer forums.

July 29, 2005: A reader forwards Jarvis the following conversation of two bank tellers on their lunch break:

August 26, 2005: A salesman from Dell calls Jarvis about his son’s laptop (which was also experiencing difficulty) and finally admits that he is cold calling to sell Dell-branded broadband service to Dell customers. Dell hell continues.

August 29, 2005: Jarvis recounts a call with Dell’s corporate communications officer. Missed opportunity: Dell talks to customers, not with them; Dell wants to leverage the blogoshpere not participate; Jarvis offers to relay a message to the blogosphere on Dell’s behalf, gets a boilerplate talking point about improving customer service.

From that point forward, the Dell Hell saga is chronicled in MSM publications, business journals, marketing and PR case studies, thought-leading blogs and smaller blogs with similar Dell issues. Jarvis still receives daily e-mails about readers’ Dell Hell experiences.

Hey Jarvis. I honestly think you have no life. Honestly? Do you have a life, or do just spend it trying to make Dell miserable. I’ve been working with Dell the past three weeks researching trashy blogs that worms like you leave all over that frigen blogosphere and I cant honestly say that Dell is trying to take a step towards fixing their customer service. They hire guys like me to go on the web and look through the blogs of guys like you in hopes that we can find out your problem and fix it. But honestly I dont think you have a problem Dell can fix. Your problem is you have no life.

No more plastic wrap, pleaseEnvironment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power

cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just

imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Something to think about

Standardize Power Cables for LaptopsAccessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another

or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances,

including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAMSales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you

would pay to pick up the ram yourself.

On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local

computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging

NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista NotebookLinux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,

I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same

Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 !

Linuxversion: 923,44 !

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive!

Make Linux a choice on all systemsLinux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by synful Jun 8

Guys, why is it when you can allegedly get Linux on desktops and laptops, that it is never an option in the

configuration of a product prior to purchasing?

All we seem to get as an option is Windows and then there is no option to not have Windows as an operating system.

I understand that you may have reasons behind the system not having Linux as an option but surely you do not use

hardware that is so non standard that either Ubuntu or SuSE will not work on it?

In the event that the computer that you use is not Linux compatible, then note this on the configuration page

accordingly. For arguments sake have a pop up advising that some hardware is not compatible with Linux if it is

selected as an OS choice.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus

problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking

for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they

wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what

open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your

Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu

is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop,

and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except

from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you

offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I

probably would have already ordered.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computersSoftware submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do.

Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent

research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant,

not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and

laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on

its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that

consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business

users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup

time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled

trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware

configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the

options we give our customers

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.comDell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high

quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of

hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top

quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS OfficeSoftware, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is

more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:

- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!

- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls

- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others

&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]

- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program

- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing

- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player

- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent

software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed:

article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of

confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is

well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is

encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Backlit KeyboardsAccessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic

to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.

This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit EthernetXPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home

networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I

would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology

with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a

Latitude.

Put Ubuntu on sale at the same time as Windows (unfair to Ubuntu salescount if we install it afterwords)Advertising and Marketing submitted by brett_alton Jun 26

I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the

same specs are $699.

Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?

Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with

that:

1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux

2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu

laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?

Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to

purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this

important?

I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best

interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.

I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the

same price as the other guys.

partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was

around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just

labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of

FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would

be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall

Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would

want to offer the best for their customers, no?

NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

Use magsafe power connectorsLaptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is

tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini InspironLaptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by

JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad.

IMPLEMENTED**

Latitude.

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptopsLaptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the

available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me.

How about another update on the highest voted ideas.IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the

top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or

rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same

partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was

around (2004, if I recall).
