El origen actual del núcleo urbanocorresponde a los musulmanes que dieron este nombre, que significa lugar escarpado y de difícil acceso.

The origin of the present town centre comes from the Muslims who gave it this name, meaning steep or difficult

acces.

Güejar- Sierra se sumó a “la sublebación de

las Alpujarras” dificultando la victoria

de Juan de Austria, pagando las

consecuencias con el despoblamiento. En

1575, una vez repoblada, se crea la

Junta Comunal de Güéjar Sierra, vigente

en la actualidad.

Güejar- Sierra joined the “Usurping of the

Alpujarras”, the people made the victory of Juan de

Austria a little more difficult however they

paid the consecuences with

the despopulation of the village.

In 1575, now repopulated, a committee wich

managed the communal lands of Güéjar Sierra was founded. This still exists to this day.

La mayor parte del territoriode Gúéjar Sierra pertenece al Parque Nacional y Naturalde Sierra Nevada, en donde se encuentran las cumbres

más elevadas de la península.

The majority of Güéjar Sierra´sland belongs to de National andNatural Park of Sierra Nevada, wich the highest mountain tops

of the Iberian Peninsula are found.

important tributary of the Guadalquivir River.

El casco antiguo del pueblo conserva el trazado de callejuelas estrechas y casas encaladas con rincones llenos

de macetas, herencia de la arquitecturaárabe.

The old area of the village conserves the layout of narrow alleyed streets and

whitesashed houses covered with plants, inherited from the Arabic

Culture.

En 1973, se acordó el cierre de la línea debido a la Construcción del embalse de Canales.

At the beginning of the 20th cnetury, deDuke of San Pedro de Galantino motivated

an original and romantic project: the construcction of a local train service,one of the pioneers with reference to

Spanish mountain train services.In 1973 the Council of Ministers decided

to close down the service, the main reason being the unminert construction

of the Canales Reservoir.
