WHO IS A CHAIRPERSON?The board is a collective decision
making body. In other words, even though individual preferences are expressed, eventually the collective wisdom of a body of individuals prevails. The principle behind forming and making decisions through board is to ensure that the experience and expertise of individual members can be collated and assimilated.
THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CHAIRPERSONTo ensure the board functions properly:
To plan and run meetings in accordance with the organization’s governing document.
To facilitate change and address conflict within the board.
To ensure the organization is managed effectively.
To co-ordinate various sub-committees of the board e.g. Finance, Personnel etc,
To be involved with the strategic planning of events and ensure that all activities are in accordance with the organization's vision & mission.
Provide support and supervision to staff.To manage the senior staff members of the
organization.To sit on appointment and important
decisions of the organization, as and when required.
Represent the organization.To communicate effectively the vision and
purpose of the organization.To advocate for and represent the
organization in external meetings and events.
To be aware of the changes in the external environment that can have affect on the organization.
THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A VICE CHAIRPERSON Generally, the Vice‐chairperson serves on the Executive
Committee or any special Committee of the Board along with the Chairperson
To carry out certain special tasks as delegated by the Chairperson
To substitute the Chair in his/her absence which includes, chairing meetings and performing any other Legislative/Executive role performed by the Chairperson
To support the Chair in conducting meetings in an orderly and organized manner is another big responsibility entrusted upon him/her and is expected to maintain a healthy relationship with the Chair and other Board members.
THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SECRETARY
Although, the job responsibilities of Secretary vary from organization to organization, some basic roles and responsibilities which are common are below:
