American Indian Art Survey (NAS 551) Explore the functions and purposes of the unique visual arts of North American indigenous peoples by culture area, in both the past and the present, within the overlapping contexts of culture area politics, cosmology, religion and spirituality, and gender. 3 graduate credits Aug. 29–Dec. 16, 2011 This course meets entirely online Instructor: Ceilon Aspensen is an adjunct instructor at MSU and taught high school art and journalism for five years at Patterson High School in Baltimore. She has been an artist her entire life and earned her BFA in drawing and graphic design from Mississippi State University in 1989; in 2006 she received her MA in Native American Studies with an emphasis in Electronic Distance Education Delivery from MSU. Ceilon taught art as a volunteer and served as an art mentor in the Bozeman area prior to earning her teacher certification in 2007. While working on her MA, she was awarded the College of Letters and Sciences Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Ceilon has combined her unique interests art, education, and Native American Studies to write the curriculum for this course. Online Native American Studies courses Fall 2011 Indigenous Nations of Montana (NAS 552) Explore the traditional culture and history of 11 indigenous nations resident on Montana reservations, as well as the Little Shell, who are without a federally recognized homeland. We will start in the east with the Nakoda (Assiniboine) and work our way around Montana, concluding with the A’aninin (White Clay) in the north. Shane holds a BS in Elementary Education and an MS in Native American Studies. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at MSU-Bozeman. Shane has 11 years of teaching experience in Montana, and most recently has worked with dozens of schools throughout southwest Montana in helping to implement Indian Education for All. Shane is also a singer of traditional Plains Indian style music as well as a distance runner and an avid reader.
