STORYLINE

This film is about a little girl named Esther who is an orphan. She eventually gets adopted into her new family with a brother and a deaf sister. The orphan’s mother and sister feel that she is psychologically disturbed. The sister often catches her doing something dangerous. The mother warns her husband however he does not believe her which therefore causes there marriage to fall apart. At first she is portrayed as innocent however her mother learns from a nun(head of orphanage) that she has a troubled, mysterious history. The mother later finds out that the orphan is not who she said she is.

ANALYSIS

Our opening sequence is inspired by Orphan because our storylines are similar. In Orphan the film is about a little girl who is an orphan, she is firstly portrayed as innocent however she is mostly seen carrying a sharp weapon, killing people; she has psychological problems and is a lot older than she says she is. Similarly, our film is about a young girl who suffers from psychosis and schizophrenia; she is also an orphan and a serial killer however she is unaware of what she is doing. Overall, the main characters in both of our opening sequence are similar because their minds are both unstable and they are both psychologically disturbed, but also have their differences which is that one kills intentionally while our character doesn’t.

ANALYSIS CONTINUED…

In our opening sequence it starts off with the serial killer looking up the stairs, walking up and stepping over a dead body. As she is scribbling in her diary blood is dripping on her hands. As for Orphan blood is used throughout the opening sequence. Both of our opening sequence use blood as a significant figure for our films. Blood represents violence, a murder and death. In this way both our opening sequences have a link.

ANALYSIS-HOW THEY EMPHASISE PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER Orphan emphasises psychological thriller by showing blood throughout along with scary

images. The genre is also revealed through the character, one way the opening sequence does this is by showing images of the main character, one picture shows her happy and smiling, we soon see another picture of her looking angry and it looks like a mugshot. Another way the opening sequence does this is by showing a close-up of the character’s hand holding a knife.

The way Orphan reveals the genre through the character is similar to the way my group do it. Our main character reveals this sub genre when she steps over the dead body, leaving it on top of the stairs. Also she doesn’t acknowledge the blood dripping on her hands and the extra character that she sees in the mirror.
